TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {PAUL SORVINO, GARRY SHANDLING, JOE WILLIAMS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are singer Joe Williams, actor Paul Sorvino and comedian Garry Shandling. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: his legal misadventures over the past weekend; Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher Fernando Valanzuela's controversial salary demands; how President Reagan is "hanging tough" on his tax and defense-spending policies; a disturbing rumor about radioactive waste in the oceans; a U.S.S.R. spaceship's journey to Venus; and a recent reunion of famous on-off Hollywood couple Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Next, Carson briefly comments on his DUI arrest of February 27th, stating that he regrets the incident and does not intend to repeat it, and then chats with co-host Ed McMahon about McMahon's "glamorous dinner party" over the weekend. He then discusses some amusingly strange quotes from real church bulletins; "macho" colognes for enticing women; the advent of nicotine gum, which promises to aid with smoking cessation; and other strange news stories.
Williams performs "8 to 5 I Lose" and "I Had Someone Else Before I Had You," after which Sorvino sits down with Carson and comments on his two short-lived television series, doomed because of their strong timeslot competition; his role as an evangelist reverend in "Oh, God!" (1977), inspired by Rex Humbard and other dynamic preachers; his experience attending many different schools as a child; the "overemphasis on weather" in California, compared to the East Coast; his interest in bringing opera to Hollywood; his position as a character actor and contentment with not being typecast and easily recognized by fans; his parents' pride in his success; and a remarkably accurate impression of pop crooner Jerry Vale.
Next, Shandling performs a stand-up routine in which he touches upon the following topics: his lack of fishing skills, inspired by his father's bumbling habits; the woes of camping; his recent breakup and attempts to "act macho" on a date; and his friend's unusual "divorce party." Shandling sits down with Carson and briefly discusses his first "Tonight Show" appearance of the previous year and his original material as well as his upcoming touring plans. Includes commercials and promos.
