CHICAGO HOPE: SEXUAL PERVERSITY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face. In this episode, the doctors are surprised to see Dr. Watters back in the ER, where they are faced with the arrival of a man with a knife in his back. A woman, Megan, appears a moment later and states that she was raped, and when she sees the stabbed man, exclaims that he was her attacker. Watters operates on the man, and Kate enters and recognizes him as another doctor named Kyle Mitchell whom she has known for a long time, and she scoffs at the idea that he could be a rapist. Watters brings up Billy’s claims of harassment against Kate, and she is frustrated at his lack of solidarity. Aaron meets a resident named Lawrence who asks to have lunch with him in order to “pick his brain,” and Aaron agrees. Elsewhere, Billy pesters Diane in her lab for assistance with a patient, a Mr. Stewart who had a heart attack on his wedding day and is now seeking sex advice along with his new wife. Billy comes up with a book on sexual positions and tries to discuss it with Diane, calling her “uptight” when she is unenthused. Back in the ER, a detective rudely questions Megan about her attack, implying that she is lying and possibly a prostitute, and Camille angrily defends her. Sutton examines one of Dennis' patients, a pretty 14-year-old named Florie, and is unnerved when she acts flirtatious and then asks for condoms. Sutton confronts Hancock about her and learns that she is dating a much older man who lives in her home. Dennis says he can do nothing to stop her, but Sutton reveals that her test shows that she has gonorrhea.
Camille finds Megan still in the waiting room, complaining of a headache and admitting she is afraid to go home. Camille asks Daniel to run a CAT scan for her, but he is reluctant. Camille then learns that Mitchell has not been arrested, as there is no evidence of the rape and he is a more “reliable” witness than Megan. Kate visits with Mitchell, who says that he had consensual sex with Megan and that she then asked for money, stabbing him when he refused, and Kate promises to help him. Diane and Billy show the sex book to the couple, and the man reveals that he is a virgin. The doctors confer with the couple separately and offer them very different advice about the best way to approach sex. Dennis meets with Florie’s mother and boyfriend, who says that he wants to marry her, and suggests that their arrangement is “not the healthiest.” Camille searches for Megan, and Daniel calls her out on taking the woman’s case too personally and getting too attached. Lawrence requests to study with Aaron, and before they part, Lawrence makes a romantic advance on him, much to his bewilderment. When he tells Watters about the incident, Watters asks if he might have invited the come-on in any way. Sutton spots Florie and her boyfriend kissing in the waiting room and hits the man, causing Dennis to reprimand him, saying that he does not know all the facts. Sutton, however, says that he has called child protective services.
Billy brags to Diane that he solved his patient’s marital issues by giving him an adult video, but the man is soon back in the ER with chest pains, having had an anxiety attack while watching it. Once he calms down, however, he resolves to continue working at his marriage and suggests that Billy and Diane make a good couple, much to Billy’s surprise. Kate finds Megan in Mitchell’s room, where she attacks him and demands that he admit that he raped her, and Kate pulls her off. She and Camille then argue about the case, with Camille saying that Kate acts “like a man” and Kate countering that Camille likes to play the victim. Just then, Megan collapses in the hall and is taken to surgery, where she soon dies of a subdural hematoma. Camille, upset, says that Kate is afraid of showing compassion and seeming weak. Diane conducts a lecture on AIDS research and accidentally shows the class the porn film, and she realizes that Billy switched the tapes to tease her, believing her to be tense about sex. Sutton threatens to quit over the Florie situation, but Dennis informs him that he is really struggling with the fact that he himself is attracted to her despite her age, saying that he is “not immune” to inappropriate feelings. Aaron awkwardly tells Lawrence that he is straight and not interested, but agrees to keep mentoring him. Watters, however, continues to rib him about it after work. Kate visits Mitchell again and tells him that Megan died, and asks him to tell her once and for all that he did not rape her, which he does, although it is unclear if he is lying. Camille and Daniel talk again and Camille asserts that she is not a victim like Megan and can stand up for herself. Billy brings Diane flowers sent by Mr. Stewart and apologizes for implying that she was not sexual. In response, she kisses him, much to the delight of her test subjects. Commercials deleted.
