CHICO AND THE MAN: BUENAS DIAS, MR. PRESIDENT (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a cantankerous garage owner and his wisecracking Chicano assistant. In this episode, Monica annoys Ed with her time-consuming beauty routine, and Raul reveals that two mysterious men, possibly cops, stopped him with questions about Ed. Ed claims that he is innocent of any wrongdoing, but the two men then arrive and explain that they are Secret Service agents and that President Carter is soon to visit the garage, having been invited by Raul's civics-class letter to stop by the barrio. Louie, Monica and Raul are thrilled by the honor, though Ed declares that he does not wish the President to come and confesses to Louie that he is afraid that his long-secret past as an Army deserter will be unearthed by the agents' security check. He explains that he departed the service a whole two-and-a-half hours early in his eagerness to return home to Margaret, and Louie, consulting a lawyer, agrees that Ed is "a disgrace."
Ed suffers strange and shameful dreams about his formal court martial as "Ed Benedict Brown," but Monica and Raul eagerly decorate the garage in preparation for Carter's arrival. The agents return, however, and explain that last-minute changes have forced the President to cut his visit short, meaning that he will not be coming after all. They add that Ed has "unfinished business" with the government, and he nobly "surrenders" to the agents and bids a sad farewell to his friends and family, though he is then told that he in fact left the Army a day late and merely forgot to pick up his honorable discharge papers. Ed spares a moment for relief before calculating the exact amount of overtime that he is owed, and they all wave to Carter's motorcade as it speeds by the garage. Commercials deleted.
