CHICO AND THE MAN: THE JUROR (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a cantankerous garage owner and his wisecracking Chicano assistant. In this episode, Chico returns from jury duty and Ed and Louie eagerly press him for details about the hopefully-salacious case, though Chico refuses to elaborate and hints only that a young woman is suing an old man. Though they first assume that the man is guilty, they realize that the case is probably that of Pop Winters, a well-loved "saint of the East Los Angeles" who was merely trying to revive a young lady who fainted in his hardware store. Louie points out that jury-tampering is a crime, but Ed decides to merely "tinker" with Chico and pointedly mentions Winters' many good deeds, including his sponsorship of the local Little League team, implying that such an honorable person could not possibly be guilty of lechery.

Chico, annoyed, declares that he must now disqualify himself from the jury, but the no-nonsense judge demands the name of the "vicious felon" who unfairly influenced him, and Chico finds himself locked up when he refuses to rat out his boss. Ed visits him in jail and then confronts the judge, declaring that both Chico and Winters are noble and innocent. The judge decides that she too has been swayed by Ed's arguments and declares a mistrial, much to the frustration of Winters, who has been desperate to prove his innocence and put the case behind him. Later, however, Chico and Ed are relieved to hear that he has been found not guilty, likely on the basis of his advanced age. Commercials deleted.
