CHICO AND THE MAN: WHO'S BEEN SLEEPING IN MY CAR? {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The fourth season premiere in this comedy series about a cantankerous garage owner and his wisecracking Chicano assistant. In this episode, Ed and Louie return from a fishing trip to Mexico and are surprised to find that, in addition to their fragrant catches, they have also brought along a young Mexican boy, Raul. Ed immediately wishes to send the stowaway back home, though Louie urges Ed to allow him to stay at least for the night. In the morning, Della is surprised to meet Raul, who assures her that he works in Ed's garage, and he soon tries to sweet-talk her into giving him a free breakfast. Ed again declares that he is sending his new "employee" home, but Raul slyly declares that he will tell the police that Ed kidnapped him in the interest of cheap labor for his business.
Frustrated, Ed tells Della about Raul's trick, and Della tries to persuade Raul not to get Ed into legal trouble. Raul convinces Ed to give him $30 for a bus ticket, and Louie later expresses his approval of Raul's smooth-talking ways. Ed is left alone until a policeman hauls Raul back in, explaining that he has gotten into yet more mischief, and Ed reluctantly pretends to be his guardian. Raul tells "Uncle Ed" that he sent the money home to his mother and again offers to be a helpful employee, charming a new customer when he enters the garage. Despite his reservations, Ed begins to teach Raul to fix a carburetor, then learning that he in fact kept the $30. Later that night, he allows his new friend to sleep over again, wishing "Chico" a good night. Commercials deleted.
