ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, THE: A MAN'S BEST FRIEND (TV)

Summary

One in this series about Sheriff Andy Taylor, his family, and the residents of Mayberry. In this episode, Andy meets Opie's mischievous new friend Tommy, who has impressed Opie with his state-of-the-art walkie-talkies and his claims that his father intends to buy him a horse. Goober arrives with his new dog, whom he has curiously dubbed "Spot," and Tommy soon gets the idea to convince the naïve Goober that his new friend can talk by hiding one of the walkie-talkies under his collar. Goober is shocked when Spot begins "chatting" with him and rushes over to the barber shop, and Floyd speculates that a dog could, in theory, be taught to speak, and would surely bring its owner great fame and fortune by doing so. After Spot "talks" to him again, Goober proudly tells Andy and Floyd of his amazing discovery, though they are understandably skeptical.

"Spot" tells Goober that he dislikes doing tricks and suggests that it would make for a better act if he is the one giving the commands, and as Goober obligingly "begs" and "speaks," Andy passes by and spots the boys hiding nearby with the other radio. Andy regretfully shows Goober the walkie-talkie and explains that the boys have played a trick on him, and Goober is crestfallen at the unkind prank. Aunt Bee is sure that Tommy is to blame, and Andy decides to teach them both a lesson and informs Tommy that Goober has information about a prize horse for sale nearby. Opie and Tommy dash over to Goober, who pretends that he has forgotten the horse-seller's phone number after confiding it to Spot, and an agitated Tommy finally confesses his trick – prompting Andy to reveal that they have tricked him right back. Embarrassed, Opie and Tommy apologize for the joke, and Goober eagerly agrees to play a spy game with them with the help of "FBI dog" Spot. Includes commercials.
