FRED WARING SHOW, THE {EASTER SUNDAY SHOW} {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this series of variety musical programs host by Fred Waring. In this Easter episode, Waring welcomes the audience by discussing the "new medium" of television and describing their use of multiples cameras and boom microphones. The glee club and orchestra perform "Beyond the Blue Horizon," after which soloist Joanne Wheatley sings "All of a Sudden My Heart Sings," and the chorus performs the spiritual "Dem Bones" (also called "Dry Bones") and "A Wonderful Guy" from the musical "South Pacific." Jane Wilson sings "Lover" from the film "Love Me Tonight" (1932), and pianist duo Virginia Morley and Livingston Gearhart performs a number atop a revolving piano platform. Stuart Churchill sings "On Top of Old Smoky," and Joe Marine sings "Cecilia," joined by the rest of the chorus and several dancers.

In the "video ballroom" segment, announcer Bill Bivins introduces dancers Dorita Sevilla and Frank Lawrence, who perform a rumba to "110th Street and Fifth Avenue" with the help of drummers. Next, Waring introduces Charles Mulligan and Mae Wenz, former Harvest Moon Contest champions, and they perform a foxtrot to "Marquita." Married couple Barbara and Herman Steqmann perform next, and when Waring instructs the audience to vote for their preferred couple via applause, the Steqmanns are declared the night's winners. Finally, the chorus and soloist Churchill sing "Were You There." Includes commercials and in-studio promotion for General Electric.
