ELLEN: MOVING ON {FOURTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The fourth season finale in this comedy series about the quirky misadventures of a flippant Los Angeles bookstore manager named Ellen Morgan.

In this episode, Audrey goes overboard in celebrating Ellen's coming-out by creating a "Sisterhood Corner" at the bookstore, featuring lesbian-related works. Ed tells her to get rid of it, as it is a "family bookstore" that does not cater to "tootie-fruities." He assures Ellen that he can instantly spot gay people, as they are so different from "normal" people, and is therefore shocked when she informs him that she is gay. Spence searches for a new home, and Paige finds herself uncomfortable changing clothes in front of Ellen, despite doing so countless times in the past. Later, Ellen heads to Emily's career day, and Emily cheerful outs her in front of everyone, having overheard her parents talking. Margaret arrives at Ellen's new home with an unusual gift basket and Ed, joining them, mistakes Margaret for her lover. He apologizes for Emily's behavior and then tells Ellen that she no longer needs to babysit for his kids, as planned, as his son has become ill.

Audrey bails on "girls' night" to go on a date, and when Ellen and an uncomfortable Paige head out to a movie together, they are dismayed to spot Ed at the theater with Sarah. Margaret shows Spence a very unimpressive apartment in his price range. As Joe sets up a "Canadian corner" at the bookstore, Ellen confronts Ed about the previous evening and he eventually confesses his lie. He uncomfortably states that his children are "impressionable" and should not be exposed to inappropriate people or things. Crushed by his attitude, Ellen sadly states that she cannot work alongside him any longer. Back at home, Paige admits that she feels betrayed by Ellen's revelation; Ellen points out that she lied to herself for many years. Paige is finally able to accept her friend's honesty. Joe and Audrey catch them in a misleading position, and Spence becomes Ellen's roommate once again when he admits that he still needs time to scrape the money together for his shabby new place. Includes commercials and promos.
