DINAH SHORE CHEVY SHOW, THE {MARGE AND GOWER CHAMPION, ART CARNEY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of music/variety programs hosted by Dinah Shore. In this episode, Shore performs "I'm Nuts About You" with a group of backup singers dressed as sailors, and then sings "You'd Be So Easy to Love" solo. She talks about Father's Day and her plans to head off on summer vacation, and Art Carney joins her onstage, worried that guests Marge and Gower Champion will make them look bad with their exceptional dance skills. He shows her a chart of steps and attempts to teach her some new moves, but they are interrupted by the Champions, who are dressed in a "senior prom" style. Shore quickly swaps out Gower's oversized Father's Day-present bow tie for a regular-sized one, and the couple then dances to "The Music Stopped." Carney and guest Elliott "Ted" Reid then perform a comedy sketch in which Carney portrays droll reporter Fred Burrow, interviewing the eccentric Bobo Von Heisinger, a society reporter with a "terrible sense of security" who is currently camped out at the St. Regis hotel. Carney then portrays Ed Norton, an "unsung hero" of the subterranean sanitation department, who gives a tour of his unusual home and plays a medley on the piano.
Next, Shore introduces her orchestra, conducted by Harry Zimmerman, and they play a jazzy version of "Pop Goes the Weasel." Shore next welcomes dancers Gloria DeWerd and Leona "Lee" Irwin and assistant choreographer Richard Beard, who perform a "Manhattan Square Dance" all together. After this, Shore introduces The Even Dozen singing group, which is actually a baker's dozen, and they sing an altered version of "Thirteen Men" with Shore. Shore sings "Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair)" solo, and then joins the Champions for "Balboa" from "The Girl Most Likely" (1957), originally choreographed by Gower and set on a beach. Shore and Carney sing "I Still Get Jealous" together, and Shore packs for her summer vacation, fitting a remarkable number of items into her small bag. She then introduces Edie Adams, John Raitt and Janet Blair, announcing that they will be her replacement hosts for the summer. After giving them some last-minute tips, Shore closes out the show with her signature "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet." Includes commercials.
