STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: PAST TENSE {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about a twenty-fourth-century space station, Deep Space Nine.

Sisko manages to calm the head thug, named B.C., and orders that the processing center be barricaded. Vin, an old security guard who captured Sisko and Bashir, arrives and Sisko tackles him to prevent him from opening fire; he is taken hostage as well. Bashir is worried about Sisko; by taking the role of "Gabriel Bell," he has seemingly ensured his own death. The riots are covered by the news media and broadcast worldwide. Webb arrives and Sisko lets him in; they plan to help maintain order by recruiting other residents to their cause. Dax, watching coverage of the riots, is determined to get down there despite Chris's assertions that it's too dangerous. O'Brien and Kira conduct brief visits to various time periods using the transporter and the Defiant's chronoton field in an attempt to locate Sisko, Bashir, and Dax.

B.C., Sisko, and Webb have an argument about what to do with the hostages. B.C. wants to exchange them for money and freedom, but Sisko and Webb are adamant that they demand that the sanctuary district be shut down and an employment act be reinstated to provide the residents with jobs. Despite his misgivings about their plan, B.C. concedes. Sisko insists that Webb be the one to issue the demands, believing he is best suited for the task. He attempts to make a speech via the internet, but his access is cut off partway through. However, he is able to get in contact with San Francisco Police Department detective Preston. At her request, B.C. shows her one of the hostages and threatens to harm them if their demands aren't met. Webb and Sisko speak to Preston in person and issue their demands. She says she must confer with the governor before taking any action.

Meanwhile, Bashir tends to the hostages, including a hypoglycemic woman who processed him and Sisko into Sanctuary District A earlier. She laments the attitudes and actions which led to the current state of the sanctuaries. Vin attempts to escape but B.C. catches him and threatens to shoot him. Sisko gets Vin to back off by threatening him, and then Sisko intimidates Vin into returning, outraged at his apparent indifference to the sanctuary residents. Preston tells Sisko and Webb that the governor will consider reducing the charges against them, but will not consent to shutting down the sanctuary districts. They do not accept her terms. Dax sneaks into Sanctuary District A through a sewer grate and is almost immediately captured by residents. She is delivered to the processing facility as Sisko and Bashir attempt to penetrate the net lockout preventing the sanctuary residents from voicing their grievances to millions of viewers.

Dax is filled in on the situation, and tells Sisko and Bashir that her communications badge was taken by the residents. The badge is set to emit a subspace beacon that could be detected if the Defiant locates them. They must first resolve the situation with the Bell Riots before they can beam out together. Bashir and Dax retrieve her badge from the possession of a mentally unstable man before Dax sneaks out of the sanctuary district in the sewer grate. She returns to Chris and asks him to use his clearance to override the net lockout, and he agrees when she convinces him that it is for a worthy cause. With access to the internet, sanctuary residents give testimonials to the net, talking about their desire to live normal, fulfilling lives like everyone else. The governor, acting on rumors that the hostages have been killed, authorizes the mobilization of national guard SWAT teams to move in and kill the rioters.

O'Brien and Kira finally arrive in the year 2024 and are able to communicate with Dax, setting a rendezvous point for their beam-out. Sisko moves Bashir and the hostages to safety just as the SWAT teams burst in. In the ensuing firefight Webb and B.C. are shot, and Sisko ends up taking a bullet meant for Vin. Satisfied that the hostages are alive, the SWAT teams move out to the rest of the sanctuary district. Bashir is able to prevent Sisko from dying from his gunshot wound, but Webb and B.C. aren't so lucky. They emerge to find residents lying dead in the streets, and Vin is horrified by the sight. He lets Bashir and Sisko go instead of turning them in, and decides to switch their identification cards with that of two of the casualties, thus making it appear that "Gabriel Bell" died just as history said he did. Sisko, Bashir, Dax, O'Brien, and Kira return to their own time to find that the original timeline has been restored. Bashir finds that a database entry about Gabriel Bell now shows Sisko's face. The episode ends as Sisko and Bashir ponder over the problems of the 21st Century. Commercials deleted.
