CHEERS: CHAMBERS VS. MALONE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

Diane is in a strangely good mood since she is under the impression that Sam means to propose to her. Sam, on the other hand, has no intention of doing so. Tom finally passes the bar exam after his eleventh try, much to the shock of everyone at the bar. Sam and Diane get everyone out of the bar so they can be alone. Sam tells Diane in no uncertain terms that he will never ask Diane to marry him, and she breaks down in tears. Soon Sam breaks down as well and asks her to marry him, but she says no. This prompts Sam to have a vision of him being executed for murdering Diane. He comes out of this vision, and upon hearing that Massachusetts has no death penalty chases Diane out onto the street.

The next day everyone finds out that Diane has had Sam arrested for assault, and Tom is set to represent Sam in court. Diane arrives in court wearing a neck brace despite Sam never having actually hit her. Despite Tom's obvious lack of legal competence, he manages to get Sam released without bail. However, Diane gets a statement in and explains the situation. When prompted by the judge, she elaborates on her complicated relationship with Sam, accusing herself of "emotional blackmail." She admits that Sam didn't actually hit her and, at Tom's suggestion, the judge will allow her to drop charges if Sam proposes to her in earnest. He manages to ask sincerely, and she says yes. Diane tells Sam in private that she doesn't expect him to honor the proposal since he made it under duress. However, Sam tells her that "they can stop me from killing you, but they can't stop me from marrying you." The episode ends as they share an embrace in the empty courtroom. Commercials deleted.
