SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {BURT REYNOLDS, ANNE MURRAY} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Burt Reynolds hosts this program, with musical guest Anne Murray.

In the opening sequence, several cast members offer Reynolds their sympathies for not getting an Academy Awards Best Actor nomination for "Starting Over" (1979), for which his co-stars Candice Bergen and Jill Clayburgh both earned nominations. Though Reynolds claims to be unconcerned by it, he eventually loses patience and sticks Gilda Radner in her locker. In his opening monologue, Reynolds acknowledges that seeing a famous movie star up close can be "shattering," and he sits down for a casual chat with a "fan" from the audience, Henry, who is none too familiar with his filmography.

Sketches include the following: a family with two teen daughters eagerly awaits a home visit from famous hunk Reynolds, and the parents are only too glad to send the girls off to a hotel with the movie star; a scene at an ancient Roman vomitorium, where Reynolds chats with a friendly slave and flirts with "Anorexia" before "Marcus the Nubian" stops by; and "Weekend Update," in which anchors Jane Curtin and Bill Murray discuss a potential boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games; the latest antics from the recently deposed Shah of Iran; trouble caused by recent sunspot activity; the conclusion of an eleven-day transit strike in New York; Father Guido Sarducci's views on a recent bamboo shortage and the demands of animals in general; the Chrysler company's latest significant losses; and Murray's Oscar predictions, in which he (correctly) guesses that Dustin Hoffman and Sally Field will take home acting awards and (incorrectly) selects "Apocalypse Now" (1979) for Best Picture.

Other highlights include the following: "Deliverance II," in which, at the behest of the homophobic Anita Bryant, a cop takes two "leather boys" on a camping trip in order to entrap some villainous hillbillies, though it turns out that they are all – possibly – undercover police officers; "The Burt Book," in which lonely women can find romantic solace; behind-the-scenes footage of the "Disco Stewardesses" shoot; the efforts of "The Peppers," a group of teenagers who attempt to sell raffle tickets in order to help out their favorite soft drink company, Dr. Pepper, eventually persuading their "square" parents to join in; a domestic squabble between a married couple, played by Reynolds and Radner, after an awkward dinner party; and an installment of "Baba Wawa at Large," in which the renowned reporter joins "weclusive" and eccentric veteran actor Marlon Brando in bed for an in-depth interview.

Murray performs "Lucky Me" and "Why Don't You Stick Around." Includes commercials and promos.
