DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE: UHNY UFTZ (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of Rob Petrie, the head comedy writer for television's "Alan Brady Show." In this episode, an exhausted Rob is left alone in the office after working late into the night with Sally and Buddy, and upon hearing strange noises, he is shocked to spot a flying saucer outside of the window. Buddy and Sally are highly skeptical of his claims, as is Laura, and Rob tries to find the appropriate government branch to which he should report the bizarre sighting, aware that he sounds like "some kind of a nut." Later, he talks with Dr. Phil Ridley, who suggests that the sleep-deprived Rob may have fallen asleep for a moment and imagined the sighting, though Rob remains convinced of his "close encounter."
Rob resolves to stay late at the office again and resolve the mystery, though he is again scared by creepy noises from within the building. Buddy returns and seemingly hears the odd sounds as well, and when they nervously explore the basement, they run into an eccentric man, Karl, and his assistant Hugo, who reveal that they too know about the saucer. They swear the writers to secrecy, explaining that no one must know of the spacecraft – until Christmastime, at which point they will reveal their creation and become "rulers of the toy world." Rob, realizing that the saucer was a mere unfinished toy prototype, agrees to keep the secret in exchange for a chance to play with it ahead of schedule. Program cuts off before closing credits.
