KING OF THE HILL: THE FINAL SHINSULT (TV)

Summary

One in this animated comedy series about the daily activities of Hank Hill, his family, and their neighbors, who are nestled in the middle of America's heartland in the small town of Arlen, Texas. In this episode, Peggy works as a substitute teacher and introduces a skit, featuring Bobby, telling the story of Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna and the theft of his artificial leg during the Texas Revolution. She explains that they will be taking a field trip to see the leg in the Arlen Museum, after which it will finally be returned to Mexico. Hank's offensive and irascible father Cotton arrives, driving very dangerously and explaining that he and his much younger girlfriend Didi have split up. He declares that he intends to renew his driver's license, though Hank objects, and Cotton is angry when he learns about Santa Anna's leg, as he lost his own shins in World War II. At the DMV, Hank tells the clerk to switch the eye chart, causing the near-sighted Cotton, who memorized the letters, to fail the test. When Dale lets slip about Hank's trick, Cotton angrily declares that he is moving in with him instead.

Dale forges a new license for Cotton, who soon gets into another car accident and is arrested. Hank tries to tell the cop that he is just "a character," not senile, though she states that he must keep a closer eye on him. Cotton soon returns to Dale's house, still mad about his son's betrayal, and Hank appeals to Didi, trying to arrange a reunion. She recalls their first meeting in the hospital, when she was working as a candy striper, but declares that "the magic is gone" between them. Stuck, Hank asks Cotton to be a chaperone on Bobby's field trip to the museum, but this backfires when Cotton rants loudly about Santa Anna's leg and how it should not be returned. He then steals the leg with Dale's help and hides it in a secret shrine of sorts, declaring that it is "leverage" and he will return it once his license is renewed. Hank finally realizes that his father is "crazy," and when the police come, Dale quickly rats out Cotton and Cotton is taken to the VA hospital. Hank and Peggy tell him that he can leave if he tells them where the leg is, though they privately agree that they cannot care for him forever. Feeling guilty, Hank brings Didi to the hospital and recreates their first meeting, and the couple reunites. The leg is returned to a Mexican general in an official ceremony, but it soon breaks and they realize that it is the pretend one from the class play. Elsewhere, Cotton returns the real leg and happily receives his new Mexican driver's license. Commercials deleted.
