COMEDY TONIGHT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this summer comedy/variety series hosted by Robert Klein.
Highlights include the following: family members' unsuccessful attempt to bring a criminal down from a high window; a run-through of "things you won't see" on the series, including showgirls, corny jokes , and musical numbers such as "Sometimes I'm Happy" and "What Goes Up"; a parody of "The Carol Burnett Show"; a "poverty dinner party" thrown by some snooty New Yorkers, with a guest list including "the entire spectrum of inequality"; a performance of "Van Lingle Mungo," a bossa nova number listing baseball players from the 1940s; a protest of an all-nude production of "Oh! Calcutta"; Klein's performances of "Let's Do It" in assorted musical styles; a "generation gap" dilemma with a teenage son rejecting his "fascist" parents' dreams of his becoming a doctor in favor of revolution, only to eventually give in and then refuse to join their country club; George Washington's father's frustration with his son's endless honesty; an updated and decidedly less-than-fun version of "Ain't We Got Fun?"; a chat with Klein's best friend Peter Chalker, who assures Klein that his show will someday be funny; and an exploration of a government building in Washington, D.C. that reveals a good deal of incompetence and lack of progress amongst the workers.
