BOY MEETS WORLD: GRADUATION {FIFTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The fifth season finale in this comedy series about teenager Cory Matthews, who balances his theories on life and friendship against those of his off-the-wall Philadelphia-based family. In this episode, Cory is excited about their final week of high school, even briefly reconnecting with Frankie and Joey, "the Cory and Shawn of the underworld," and Stuart Minkus, Topanga's brainy nemesis. Shawn does not share their enthusiasm, however, finding it hard to be supportive of his friends' choices to move on. Cory urges Topanga to reconsider her choice to attend Pennbrook, not wanting her to give up Yale just to be with him. Mr. Feeny gives the class an optional assignment to write about their feelings on leaving high school, and Topanga is excited to receive her record-breaking 700th "A" grade, though Shawn is disinterested. At home, Jack attempts to celebrate with him, though they end up fighting again when he feels that Shawn is not sufficiently appreciative of his wishes. Eric, however, is focused on his plans to prevent his beloved Mr. Feeny from retiring and moving away, as he plans.

Later, Cory is thrilled by the unimpressive "senior prank," and Shawn waffles about doing Feeny's final assignment. Topanga prepares her valedictorian speech, and Cory again encourages her towards Yale, though admits to Shawn that he does not truly want her to go. Topanga consults Feeny, who advises her to choose Yale unless she has a very strong reason not to, though they are interrupted by a determined Eric. In their last class, only Shawn, Cory and Topanga stay past the bell, and Feeny tells them that despite his frustrations with them, he has received immense "gratification" from teaching them over the years. At the ceremony, Topanga gets up to give her speech, but then turns it over to Shawn, who uncharacteristically reflects on his high school experience and sadly admits that he "could've done better." Feeny attempts to speak again, though is interrupted again by Eric's passionate rendition of "To Sir, With Love." The students receive their diplomas, and just as the ceremony concludes, Topanga tells Cory that she does indeed have a good reason not to attend Yale and proposes to him on the spot. Includes commercials and promos.
