HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET: BROTHERLY LOVE (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic police series about a department of reflective homicide detectives in Baltimore, Maryland. In this episode, Lewis and Sheppard examine a crime scene at which Adam Ralston was shot in his home, which he shared with his identical twin brother, David. They question David and the mother, who explain that Adam's girlfriend, Susan, was the last to see him alive. Gharty examines a motorcycle catalogue, and Munch is amused when Bayliss attempts to woo Sheppard by giving her a book about Zen. Gharty and Ballard investigate the death of a teenager, Scotty, shot in the head while in the car with a friend, Paul, though they immediately doubt the other boy's description of events. When they question Paul, he finally admits that they were in Washington D.C. at the time, attempting to buy crystal meth. Susan tells the detectives that the brothers were extremely close, to an invasive degree, and that it affected her relationship with Adam, and Lewis and Sheppard guess that one of them is the killer. Falsone encounters Giardello, who explains that he wants to move back to Baltimore and may take a job as an FBI agent liaison to the department, though he is unsure about how to tell his father.
Gee tells Gharty and Ballard that Scotty's death is D.C.'s case, not theirs, but D.C. Narcotics officer Landrewsky argues that it is Baltimore's job. Lewis and Sheppard continue interviewing the twins' co-workers and friends, learning that David was the "dominant" twin and that Adam was oddly jealous of Susan. Gee grows annoyed with their lack of progress and puts them both "on notice." Bayliss asks Stivers for advice about Sheppard, but she points out that most of the men in the department are also interested in her. David declares that nothing could have come between him and his brother, and the detectives decide to question the mother again, guessing that she falsely alibi'd her son. When they do, she implies that she did indeed lie about David's whereabouts that night, but refuses to admit any more, saying that she will not lose both sons. Paul is unable to give helpful details about Scotty's shooter, and an annoyed Gee finally orders Gharty, Ballard and Landrewsky to work the case all together. He is then further upset to hear from Captain Gaffney that Giardello is joining their squad. Lewis and Sheppard confront David again at the funeral home, suggesting that Adam mocked his brother for being the "weak" one and that David murdered him in jealous revenge.
Gharty, Ballard and Landrewsky take Paul out driving around D.C. to jog his memory, and Gharty is impressed with Landrewsky's flashy sports car. Gee confronts his son about his secrecy, again realizing the deep dysfunction between them. Sheppard thanks Bayliss for the book and they briefly chat about the case and their own siblings, but Sheppard is called away when they learn that David has barricaded himself in his home with his gun. Sheppard and Lewis arrive and talk to him, and he finally reveals that he recently slept with Susan, who believed him to be Adam, and "accidentally" shot his brother during a heated confrontation. Landrewsky says that he will touch base about the case later, and Gharty confesses to Ballard that he recently left his wife, rethinking his life after his recent near-fatal shooting. Giardello tells Falsone about his father's inscrutable emotions towards him, and they discuss the challenges between fathers and sons. Sheppard wonders about David's true emotions, and Lewis reveals that he has a mentally ill brother who has caused his family grief. Elsewhere, Giardello attempts to settle into his new job at the homicide department.
