DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, THE: BUDDY SORRELL, MAN AND BOY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy programs about the personal and professional life of Rob Petrie, the head comedy writer for television's "Alan Brady Show." In this episode, Sally and Rob observe that Buddy has started behaving strangely, taking odd phone calls and departing the office early, and Rob begins to wonder if Buddy is having marital problems again. After learning that Buddy fibbed about having to visit his mother, Rob speculates that Buddy may be seeing a psychiatrist about his problems with Pickles. He and Sally attempt to get Buddy to spill the beans, but he dodges their questions and again leaves early. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, Rob calls up Pickles and, finding that Buddy has lied to her as well, begins to think that he is having an affair.
Rob's theory is seemingly strengthened when Sally takes a message for Buddy from a mysterious woman, while elsewhere Buddy visits a woman named Dorothy, expressing his doubts about their "sneaking around." At the office, Mel is appalled by the news of Buddy's infidelity and suggests that they should allow him to be caught by the mystery woman's husband, but it is then revealed that Dorothy is married to Leon, Buddy's rabbi – who is tutoring him for his very belated bar mitzvah. Back at work, Rob finally confronts Buddy about the "affair," but Buddy protests that his evenings with Dorothy and Leon are "strictly kosher," admitting that he avoided telling Pickles of his secret studies because he is doing so for his mother's sake. Though befuddled, Rob, Laura, Sally and Mel all attend the formal ceremony, praising their friend as he finally "becomes a man." Commercials deleted.
