STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: CROSSOVER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about a twenty-fourth-century space station, Deep Space Nine.

On their way back to Deep Space Nine from the Gamma Quadrant, Bashir and Kira experience a warp malfunction which complicates their journey through the wormhole. They arrive on the other side to find the station orbiting Bajor, and they are escorted there by a Klingon vessel. Upon arriving there they are seized by Garak, dressed in Cardassian regalia and referring to the station by its old name, Terok Nor. They also encounter another version of Kira, known as "Intendant Kira," who seems to be in charge of the station. Bashir is taken into the station's ore processing facility while Kira is given over to Intendant Kira. Meanwhile, Garak conducts interrogations on enslaved humans who have recently been trying to escape the station.

At the ore processing plant, Bashir meets another version of Odo, who is a brutal taskmaster who puts him to work with the other humans. Intendant Kira determines that Kira and Bashir are from an alternate universe, the same one visited by Captain James T. Kirk and his crew a century ago. She explains that Captain Kirk convinced her universe's version of Spock to reform the imperialist policies of humans' Terran Empire, but by doing so he left the Empire vulnerable to an alliance of Klingons of Cardassians. Now humans are slaves to that alliance, and Bajor joined with them after being freed from the Terran Empire's tyranny. Kira wishes to return to her own universe, but Intendant Kira says she does not know how to send her back. She convinces Intendant Kira to allow Bashir to live; Intendant Kira seems fascinated by her alternate self and arranges quarters for her.

Later Kira manages to briefly speak with the bedraggled Bashir and inform him of their situation. They plan to return to their own universe by recreating the transporter accident that Kirk used to travel between universes. To do this, they will require the technical expertise of O'Brien, and Bashir agrees to try to secure the services of his alternate universe counterpart. Kira visits Quark at his bar and tries to get him to arrange for a transporter for her to use. However, they are interrupted by the arrival of Garak, who accuses Quark of aiding human escapees and arrests him. Bashir manages to get in touch with O'Brien, known as "Smiley" in this universe and working as a fixer in the ore processing plant. Bashir talks about Smiley's counterpart in the other universe and about their friendship. Smiley is suspicious of Bashir and refuses to help him. Kira meets this universes' version of Sisko, a starship pirate captain working for Intendant Kira.

Kira is called into Intendant Kira's office, where she reveals that she discovered Kira's plan to acquire a transporter; she remarks that her universe's transporters have been modified to prevent inter-universal transit. Intendant Kira is upset that Kira is afraid of her and doesn't "love" her. Garak brings Quark into the room, distraught and barely coherent after interrogation. He has confessed to helping humans escape from the station, and Intendant Kira expresses her pity for him before ordering his execution. Intendant Kira than invites Kira to a party that night, leaving Kira disgusted at her counterpart's lack of morality. Garak meets with Kira in private and offers to help her return to her own universe. In exchange, he asks that she help him kill Intendant Kira and take her place for a time before "vanishing," along with Bashir. He threatens that if she does not assist him, Bashir will be killed.

Bashir and Kira determine that they have only one other chance to escape: the wormhole, which the Klingon-Cardassian alliance appears to be unaware of. Kira speaks with Captain Sisko, asking him to help her and Bashir reach their runabout and prevent the assassination of Intendant Kira. Captain Sisko laughs off her plan, explaining that Garak is constantly attempting to kill Intendant Kira. Kira is appalled at Captain Sisko's apathy for the plight of the enslaved humans, recalling her own experiences as a slave of the Cardassians. She notes that despite the fact that he only seems to care about himself and his crew, he is still a victim of the oppressive regime. At Intendant Kira's party, Captain Sisko prevents one of his men from getting into a fight with a Klingon soldier. Kira and Intendant Kira arrive, each wearing virtually identical outfits as a part of Garak's scheme.

In the ore processing plant an accident causes radiation leakage. Bashir uses the opportunity to grab a disruptor and kill Odo. He escapes and runs into Smiley, who is busy trying to contain the radiation and does not wish to help him, fearing that he will be killed. Bashir appeals to Smiley's sense of decency and says that his current life isn't worth living. This convinces Smiley to help Bashir escape, hoping that he can escape to another universe along with them. However, Bashir and Smiley are immediately seized by Klingon guards and brought before Intendant Kira. She is outraged at Bashir for killing Odo, and laments his death. She asks Smiley why he chose to assist Bashir, and he says he was moved by news of his other universe counterpart and his accomplishments, believing that any life would be better than his current one.

Intendant Kira orders their execution but is stopped by Captain Sisko, who has a change of heart and sides with Kira and Bashir. He seals Intendant Kira and her guards away and gets Kira and Bashir back to the runabout. He proclaims that he and his crew will try to incite a rebellion against the Klingon-Cardassian alliance and slowly improve the lives of humans in his universe. Smiley offers to assist him, as it would give him something worth living for. Kira and Bashir take control of their runabout and head for the wormhole, intercepted by a Klingon cruiser. They manage to reach the wormhole in time to return to their own universe, where Commander Sisko and the rest of Deep Space Nine have been worried about them. Commercials deleted.
