CHICAGO HOPE: WITH THE GREATEST OF EASE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face.

In this episode, Camille and Aaron struggle to figure out their feelings for one another as they proceed with their split. At the hospital, Aaron is surprised not to recognize Joseph Collito, a recent patient who has returned with gallstones, and a family of trapeze artists, the Flying Travellis, are soon rushed into the ER after a terrifying fall. At a bar, Geiger urges Aaron to "mitigate" his conflicted feelings by pursuing other women — and then finds himself arrested for solicitation after propositioning an undercover cop, Detective Stacey Halmora. Birch rushes to the precinct and argues that prosecuting Geiger for a simple misunderstanding "isn't worth it," and he is released.

Anthony, the Travelli family patriarch, seems determined to return to performing, though Aaron explains that his nephew must be kept in a coma to alleviate brain swelling; Anthony admits that his own brother died in a similar accident. Winslow is offended when Joseph asks that Aaron, a neurosurgeon, perform his surgery instead of her; when Geiger loses his temper on a parking-spot thief, she demands to know what "personal stuff" is prompting his alarming behavior. Anthony studies a tape of the trapeze accident and realizes that he was at fault, and Camille confides in Giandamencio about her excitement in starting her newly single life. As the Travelli family prays for the injured boy, Watters tries to understand why four generations of Travellis have pursued such a dangerous career. Geiger thanks Birch for his helpful intervention with the cops. Joseph finally admits that he wants a Jewish doctor, as he believes them to be superior, and wonders if Winslow was an "affirmative action" hire.

Geiger finally confides in Winslow about his mentally ill wife and the death of their son, admitting that he's probably "afraid of real intimacy." The Travelli boy soon dies on the operating table, and though Anthony tearfully urges the family to learn from the deadly mistake and move on, a distressed Aaron yells at Joseph for his bigoted demands. Watters scolds both Aaron and Camille, suspecting that their domestic troubles are behind his outburst; he reminds them to make patients comfortable however possible, even with inappropriate requests like Joseph's. Geiger abruptly breaks things off with Winslow, admitting that he is falling for her despite having believed that their racial difference would "shield" him from strong emotions; she muses that she both admires and pities him. Anthony's sister-in-law rages at him for her husband and son's deaths, and Aaron introduces Joseph to his new surgeon, Dr. Marvin Rosenzweig. The Travellis depart, with Watters urging them to finally "use a net," and Camille returns to her empty new apartment as Aaron and Geiger drown their sorrows, agreeing that there will be "more good days than bad" ahead.
