L.A. LAW {LA LAW}: HE'S A CROWD (TV)

Summary

One in this series of legal dramas set in the Los Angeles law firm of McKenzie Brackman.

In this episode, Michael defends Greg Edmonson, on trial for murdering his fiancée Cheryl; the man explains that he has multiple-personality disorder and that Sean, another one of his identities, is the real culprit. In a staff meeting, everyone is surprised to see Roxanne acting as Douglas' assistant, and Tommy reveals that Michael's opponent in Greg's case, D.A. Zoey Clemmons, is his ex-wife. Arnie is still upset that Roxanne intends to testify against him, having been subpoenaed by his soon-to-be ex-wife Corinne. Leland meets with his friend Tom Baker, a high-powered CEO, and he explains that one of his employees, Alan Wendell, is attempting to run him out of his job. Leland agrees to help, especially when he learns that Wendell will surely find other representation if he gains power. Tommy represents Roxanne as she uncomfortably answers questions about Arnie's many affairs during his relationship with Corinne, and Corinne is furious to learn that one of those affairs was with her close friend Gwen. Dr. Carlson testifies about Greg's disorder, saying that he developed the extra personalities in response to childhood sexual abuse and agreeing that Sean could have killed Cheryl without Greg's knowledge. Zoey, however, points out that neither Greg nor Sean are technically insane, arguing that the defense does not hold up.

Leland tells Rosalind about Wendell's smear campaign, and she urges him to find dirt on Wendell to make him abandon his attempts to ruin Baker. Douglas is annoyed when Abby turns a big client, California Rifle, over to C.J., guessing that they have an arrangement involving kickbacks. He offers a deal in which he cuts her salary but allows her to keep 20 percent of the money made from clients she brings in, and she agrees. Tommy questions Corinne about her "emotional distress," pointing out that she did not sue her first ex-husband and hinting that she could lose her daughter if she is really so unstable; she angrily admits that she wants vengeance against Arnie. Michael questions Alan, another one of Greg's personalities, who also accuses Sean of the murder. Zoey argues that Alan, too, will go to jail if Greg is found guilty; he counters that "Greg's cure is his demise" and that going to prison would benefit him. When she questions him more aggressively, the violent Sean emerges instead, and he puts the blame on Greg, causing Michael to demand a mistrial, as Sean is not his client. Rosalind meets with Wendell and offers to secretly give him information about Baker's scandalous past if he promises to retain Leland as his lawyer once he takes over the company. He guesses that she really wants his business for herself, as Leland will surely reject him as a client if he blackmails Baker.

After they celebrate their victory together, C.J. impulsively kisses Abby, who seems flustered. The next day, Abby tries to tell her that she is heterosexual and not interested in her; C.J. mentions that she herself is "flexible" and Abby seems unsure. Carlson fails to summon Sean through hypnosis and Michael tries to provoke him into emerging, but they instead meet a new personality, Camille, who is Sean and Greg's aunt. She declares that she killed Cheryl for breaking Greg's heart, adding that she also murdered their abusive father and made it look like suicide. Arnie and Corinne talk and admit they still have feelings for one another, but she says that she cannot respect or trust him, and he is saddened to realize that they are truly over. Judge Harcourt finds Greg not guilty by reason of insanity and orders him to enter an institution. Camille, who has taken over entirely, refuses out of protectiveness for the boys, stating that she has "put them to sleep" and is refusing Michael's request to let Greg out. Abby invites C.J. over for the evening, suggesting that she is interested in pursuing something. At their meeting, Wendell orders Baker to step down and reveals that he has damning information on him. Leland then states that he faked the files himself, guessing that Rosalind would use them to betray him. Wendell is forced to resign instead, at which point Leland and Rosalind reveal that they were working together all along to save Baker. At home, Arnie tucks young Chloe into bed and gently explains that he has to leave, admitting that he is at fault and asking her to care for Corinne. Commercials deleted.
