WELCOME BACK, KOTTER: SADIE HAWKINS DAY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs about high school teacher Gabe Kotter, who returns to his alma mater, James Buchanan High in Brooklyn, to teach a group of incorrigible students known as "sweathogs."

The sweathogs are being asked out by girls for the Sadie Hawkins dance; even Mr. Woodman finds himself the target of another teacher's affections. Vinnie gives Arnold advice on how to act like him in order to secure a date. However, Vinnie admits to Mr. Kotter that he doesn't have a date himself. Mr. Kotter tries to tell him a story about how when he was in high school, the prettiest girl in school was never asked out because everyone was too nervous to do so. However, Vinnie doesn't listen and the point is driven home when a girl who intended to ask Vinnie out instead asks out Arnold.

The next day, Vinnie pretends to his friends that he already has a date, but turns down another date offer since he doesn't want the other guys to know that he was only able to secure a date last-minute. Everyone but Vinnie attends the dance; he watches from the window of Mr. Kotter's classroom. Mr. Kotter and Julie find him there while looking for a private space. Vinnie is too embarrassed to go to the dance without a date, but Mr. Kotter says it takes courage to go down there alone rather than hide. Finally he convinces Vinnie to attend the dance, where he admits to everyone that he couldn't secure a date. His friends understand the situation and are there to support him. The episode ends as Vinnie ends up dancing with Judy, who had been continually pestering the sweathogs for a date. Commercials deleted.
