SPIN CITY: INTERNAL AFFAIRS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about Michael Flaherty, the Deputy Mayor of New York City, and the complications that arise in his professional life because his girlfriend is a City Hall reporter.

Nikki breaks up with Arthur, but Mike claims that he is no longer interested in her. However, they are ardently pursuing a relationship with each other in secret. The police are unveiling a new hi-tech law enforcement vehicle, and the mayor is scheduled to test it out in a stakeout. Nikki confides in Mike that they should wait a few months before they sleep together, and Mike tries to pretend that he agrees with her. The mayor sits inside the police truck, accompanied by Stuart, Carter, and James. Stacey tries to manipulate Paul by pretending to be a psychic on a telephone hotline. Later Nikki changes her mind and wants to have sex with Mike. He immediately agrees and they rush out of the office together, but Nikki is roped into having drinks with Stacey and Janelle before going back to Mike’s apartment. However, when she gets there she finds that Mike grew impatient and masturbated, thus ruining their plans to have sex. During the stakeout the mayor and company spot what appears to be a drug deal in progress with an undercover cop, but the mayor switches on the intercom and ruins the entire thing.

Paul arrives at Mike’s apartment unexpectedly as a response to threats made by the “psychic,” and sees Mike and Nikki together. Nikki decides to leave to try to avoid suspicion. The next day they make arrangements to meet again, still trying not to alert their co-workers. The mayor and his staff attempt another stakeout outside of a hotel purported to be hosting an infamous prostitution ring. Mike and Nikki happen to check into that hotel under assumed names hoping to have a sexual encounter there. However, a policeman arrests them for solicitation in the lobby when he sees Mike lend her some money. Mike claims that he doesn’t know her and asks that she be brought to the police station in order to avoid having her seen by the mayor and the rest of the staff. Paul figures out that Stacey was posing as his psychic and is initially angry but forgives her, particularly as her advice had some unexpectedly good results for him. Later Nikki gets out of holding and confronts Mike in his office over his actions. She speculates that they may not be meant to be together, but doesn’t want to discuss the matter with Mike. The police truck ends up being stolen with the mayor still inside. Mike and Nikki run into each other near the Flatiron Building and apologize to each other, sharing a kiss. They end up going back to Mike’s apartment and sleeping together. Includes commercials.
