CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {CHER} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Cher. The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, answering a question about her not-so-memorable first kiss. The first sketch features an eccentric concert pianist who attempts to play a duet with his protégé, but the younger man soon proves to be less committed than he had hoped and the two musicians end up destroying one another’s pianos while still trying to complete the piece. Burnett then introduces Cher, who takes the stage and sings “Just This One Time.” Burnett joins her onstage and they banter about the perks of having their own variety shows, and they sing a medley duet about their shows, eventually engaging the audience in the tune. The next sketch features a wealthy man who has decided to divorce his wife, as he has fallen for another woman, but his mistress is a mousy and highly nervous creature who does not want to cause trouble. The man’s wife turns out to be a glamorous high-society lady, and she is at first disdainful of her husband’s choice, although he protests that she is “wholesome.” Finally, however, the man’s wife breaks down and begs the woman not to steal her husband, as she still loves him deeply, and, touched, he declares his renewed love for her and they reunite, and the mistress is somewhat literally tossed aside.
Next, some of the year’s “best” commercials are presented, including ads for laundry detergent, a long-distance phone service, pantyhose and gourmet coffee. Following this is another installment of “As the Stomach Turns,” in which Marian laments her “humdrum” life and yearns for excitement. Just then, she is surprised by the appearance of a glamorous character, played by Cher, who is “half-Indian and half-dressed” and who shows off her exciting new hairdo, explaining that her hairdresser Warren has changed her life. Marian quickly calls him and he arrives, asking if she has ever “had a pageboy,” but their appointment is interrupted by the arrival of Beverly, Marian’s “trendy nouveau-riche” friend, who requests a “touch-up” of her own coif, much to Marian’s annoyance. Mother Marcus then joins them and demands if her son has called, which he has not, and Warren, intrigued by the feisty lady, offers to give her a bob. Just then, Marian declares that she has a dramatic announcement to make…on the next episode of “As the Stomach Turns.”
Next, a hip new band plays a musical number, and Burnett and Cher take the stage dressed in fabulous diva costumes and perform an original song, “Solid Gold Record & Solid Silver Platform Shoes,” about the joys of being a performer. Burnett then closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Cher’s autograph to her guest book. Commercials deleted.
