CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {GLEN CAMPBELL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program features special guest Glen Campbell. The episode begins as Burnett takes the stage and chats with the audience, answering questions and singing a duet, "You Made Me Love You," with a Bea Arthur lookalike from the crowd. The first sketch features a trio of doctors sharing a meal, discussing how one friend endured many different experimental vaccines in an attempt to cure swine flu. He and his co-worker then happily announce their engagement, but matters are complicated when he starts suffering side effects to the drugs. The wedding is soon called off, but when the bride-to-be catches the same symptoms, it seems that they are a match made in "hog heaven." Campbell then takes the stage and performs "Southern Nights." Next, two friends enjoy lunch together, but one spots her friend's husband dining with a younger woman and goes to slapstick lengths to prevent her noticing, only to learn that the young lady is his younger sister.

In the following sketch, Burnett portrays a secretary taking a memo from her boss, the head of an office supply company, angrily denouncing claims that their products are shoddy, though this is proven to be extremely true as various items around the office malfunction and cause her injury. Burnett and Conway then reproduce Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson's amorous pose from the album cover of "A Star is Born," though the pair is less than thrilled to be stuck together after an accident with some crazy glue and her husband's poorly-timed return home. Next, a well-dressed couple in an elevator performs an impromptu tango together, and Burnett portrays a slovenly housewife who bickers with her handyman husband as he complains about her appearance and poor sandwich-making skills, and she despairs of his less-than-handiness. Burnett then joins Campbell onstage, and he gives her a music lesson as they duet on "Walk Right In" and "Wichita Lineman." Dancers join the performance as Campbell plays "Classic Gas," then switching to a bluesy version of "I Got Rhythm" and a polka version of "Baby Face" on banjos. They then segue into "Sugarfoot Rag," with help from the dancers. Burnett closes the show by singing her signature good-night song and adding Campbell's autograph to her guest book.
