MARTIN SHORT SHOW, THE {NATHAN LANE, ALI LANDRY, CHICAGO} (TV)
Summary
One in this talk/variety show series hosted by comedian Martin Short.
In this episode, Short performs his opening monologue and discusses reports of a drive-through nativity scene; the popularity of artificial Christmas trees; and a strange lawsuit leveled at "The Tonight Show." Short then chats with announcer Michael McGrath, who explains that he loves Tuesday because it is the "underdog" day of the week, and they present a round of "On This Day in History (And the Day After)".
The first guest, actor Nathan Lane, joins Short and discusses why he "never quite fit in" in Los Angeles and prefers New York; why he does not drive or have a license; his purchase of a "trendy" new loft apartment and temporary residence in a chic hotel during its renovation; his family's passive-aggressive holiday traditions; his plans to celebrate New Year's Eve in Las Vegas at a Barbra Streisand show; his voiceover role as an ill-tempered cat in "Stuart Little" (1999), another rodent-themed film after 1997's "Mousehunt"; a phone call from Jerry Lewis regarding his annual telethon; and the fact that Lane and Short have never worked together. The two then sing "Bosom Buddies," with help from pianist Marc Shaiman, poking fun at their respective short-lived sitcoms.
Short then highlights his "employee of the month," elevator operator Wiley, who seems to be suffering from "cabin fever" in the style of "The Shining." Next, actress Ali Landry joins Short and discusses her Doritos commercial, in which she performs impressive stunts in a laundromat; her role as a beauty queen in "Beautiful" (2000), directed by Sally Field; her real-life crowning as Miss USA in 1996; why she does not find adult beauty contests to be "demeaning" but disapproves of child pageants; her thoughts on why women participate in pageants, sometimes with the goal of an entertainment career; and her recent positive experience with Lasik surgery. Short's alter ego Jiminy Glick then stops by to flirt with Landry.
Finally, rock band Chicago, having just released its 26th album, performs "Let It Snow" and "25 Or 6 to 4." Band members briefly chat with Short about the group's longevity and the wide variety of ages within their fan base. Commercials deleted.
