FRASIER: DR. NORA (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Frasier Crane, a divorced psychiatrist who lives in Seattle and hosts a phone-in radio show. In this episode, Frasier learns that, thanks to the success of his show, his radio station intends to hire a second on-air psychiatrist. Niles, determined to get over Daphne, adapts a "raffish new look," and when Frasier meets attractive Dr. Nora Fairchild, one of the finalists for the position, he immediately gives her his endorsement. Nora arrives at the station for her first day of work, and Frasier's eager support for his "protégé" instantly disappears when she proves to hold very harsh and antiquated views on gender and sexuality, berating her callers for their "whorish" behavior. Martin notes that he does not mind her "old-fashioned values," and Niles reminds Frasier that he hired her purely because of her attractiveness and her flattery of him.a
Roz bluntly calls Nora out on her judgmental attitude, but Nora states that she will not "coddle" her patients with gentle advice, and Kenny tells Frasier that her controversial shows have been gaining high ratings for the station. After giving a caller ruthless advice about cutting off contact with her hyper-critical mother, Nora informs Frasier that he is "Seattle's great enabler," and he resolves to get rid of her at any cost. Roz soon discovers that Nora has been misrepresenting herself and is actually a "gym teacher" with two divorces and an affair behind her, but Frasier decides to assist her with her personal problems, thus proving that his kinder approach is better, rather than humiliate her. They track down Nora's estranged mother, Mrs. Mulhern, who seems delighted to be reunited with her long-absent daughter, but she then bursts into Nora's booth and begins berating her with strident Puritanical criticisms, and an embarrassed Frasier realizes that he has badly miscalculated the situation, telling the stunned listeners that the two have at least "opened the lines of communication." Commercials deleted.
