MARTIN SHORT SHOW, THE {JONATHAN LIPNICKI, TONY SHALHOUB, CORY KAHANEY, BETH LITTLEFORD, BOB MCCOY} (TV)

Summary

One in this talk/variety show series hosted by comedian Martin Short.

In this episode, Short performs his opening monologue and discusses reports of Philadelphia as America's least physically fit city; First Lady Hillary Clinton's departure from New York City; claims that sexual activity is beneficial to male athletes; and rumors of a sizable personal insurance policy taken out by actress Jennifer Lopez. Announcer Michael McGrath and bandleader Peter Michael Escovedo note their oddly similar attire, and Short and McGrath present a comedic list of made-up "drugs awaiting approval" from the Food and Drug Association.

The first guest, nine-year-old actor Jonathan Lipnicki, joins Short and discusses his new film "Stuart Little" (1999); his attendance at the premiere and his younger cousin's distress at the film's story; former First Lady Nancy Reagan's appearance at the screening; the challenge of acting alongside "nothing," as the film's titular mouse was computer-generated; his various pets, including several real mice; his preference that his school friends do not treat him like a celebrity; and his yellow belt in mixed martial arts.

Next, actor Tony Shalhoub takes the stage and discusses his role in the sitcom "Stark Raving Mad" and his relief at not having to perform the character with an accent; people's frequent misconceptions about his Lebanese heritage; his role in "Quick Change" (1990), for which he invented a nonsensical language for his cabbie character; growing up as the second-youngest of ten children; and how a big family provides a "support system" but also a lack of privacy.

Stand-up comedian Cory Kahaney then performs a routine in which she comments on her "miserable" teenage daughter; her own efforts to lose weight via aerobics and yoga; her mother's fondness for the multi-talented Martha Stewart; her daughter's efforts on a "Save the Whales" school report; and why she resents losing her right to participate in the little-kid rituals of Halloween.

Next, comedian Beth Littleford talks with Short about her role as "a funny, hip Barbara Walters" on the satirical news program "The Daily Show"; her many bizarre assignments, including her short stint as a Hooters waitress, her involvement with a "militia dating service" for survivalists, and a very unusual encounter with a farm pig; her family's skepticism about her marriage to "Daily" producer Rob Fox, given her bizarre tasks on the show; and a recurring role on "Spin City."

Finally, Bob McCoy of the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices in Saint Paul, Minnesota demonstrates a series of antiquated and highly spurious "health" items, including an instant weight-loss device, a prostate gland warmer, a hair-growth machine, a nose straightener, and a phrenology reader.
