SPIN CITY: SMILE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Deputy Mayor of New York City and his co-workers at City Hall as they deal with problems both professional and personal. Charlie interviews applicants for the job of personal assistant, and Caitlin believes he is hiring women based solely on their appearance. Charlie allows Caitlin to pick out the personal assistant instead. The city devises a new advertisement campaign which will feature images of the mayor, but the mayor does not wish to proceed due to a crack in his tooth. Caitlin hires a noticeably attractive man named Blake as the office assistant, and Charlie accuses her of hiring him based only on his appearance, but Caitlin denies this. Meanwhile, Carter and Stuart are frustrated that the office messenger keeps parking their bicycle in their parking spot. Despite Stuart's urging, Carter wishes to remain civil. Paul takes an interest in Blake and wants to serve as a mentor to him. The mayor and Charlie visit Dr. Laughlin, the mayor's aged dentist. Dr. Laughlin has been the mayor's dentist for decades and seems to treat the mayor like a child, although the mayor enjoys this treatment. Stuart finally goads Carter into running over the bicycle with his car, which seems to invigorate Carter. Caitlin begins to suspect that Paul is becoming too attached to Blake via his "mentoring" program. In the middle of his appointment, Dr. Laughlin suddenly dies, leaving the mayor's teeth ruined. The mayor does not realize that his teeth are in need of further dentistry, and Charlie and Caitlin try to break the news to him gently. Carter gains new self-confidence after running over the bicycle, becoming more assertive. Caitlin asks Charlie to fire Blake for incompetency. Charlie gets Caitlin to admit that she hired Blake based on his looks. He takes Blake aside and fires him, and Caitlin walks in on them, feigning surprise. Charlie tries to trick the mayor into getting his teeth examined, but the mayor refuses. He laments that the people he cares for most in his life always seem to leave him. Charlie feels he cannot effectively help the mayor overcome his personal problems, but Caitlin points out that such a responsibility is part of his job. At the press conference for the new advertising campaign, the mayor realizes that his teeth are in disrepair and panics, but Charlie saves him at the last minute by photographing him alongside similarly injured hockey players in order to gear the campaign more towards "diversity and imperfection." Finally the mayor consents to going to another dentist, and Charlie is on hand to provide him with comfort. The old woman who owns the bicycle confronts Carter, saying that she was using it to provide meals for the elderly and infirm. Carter apologizes and offers to write her a check for a new bicycle; it turns out that she is Stuart's grandmother and the whole thing was a scheme devised by him. Includes commercials.
