
NAT KING COLE SHOW, THE {MAHALIA JACKSON} (TV)
Summary
One in this musical variety series hosted by the popular vocalist and pianist Nat "King" Cole, one of the first major black entertainers to host his own series.
Cole opens with "Button Up Your Overcoat" and "Raintree County" from the 1957 film of the same name. Next, he introduces conductor and musical arranger Nelson Riddle, briefly explaining how Riddle assembles his songs with the help of copyists; the orchestra performs "Diga Diga Doo" from his upcoming album "C'Mon … Get Happy." Mahalia Jackson, Cole's co-star in "St. Louis Blues" (1958), takes the stage and sings "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho," and Cole joins her for "Steal Away to Jesus."
Next, Cole joins the Cheerleaders for a medley featuring "I Feel a Song Comin' On," "I Hear Music," "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)", "True Love," "Kingston Town," and "Jailhouse Rock." Jackson joins the group for "Down By the Riverside," "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)", and "The Song is Ended (But the Melody Lingers On.)" Following his musical ad for Rheingold beer, Cole performs his "memory song," "My Heart Stood Still." Includes commercials.
