LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.

In this episode, Laverne and Shirley get some mail-order lingerie. Shirley also orders a “hubba hubba heinie,” something that greatly amuses Laverne. Then, the two girls notice that they got a $56 refund check from the phone company. Shirley thinks it is a mistake and wants to return the money, but Laverne won’t let her. Later, Shirley tries on the hubba hubba heinie, but refuses to endorse the phone check. That night, Shirley dreams that she and Laverne will go to heaven if they return the check to the phone company. Laverne and Shirley even sees Carmine in heaven, and then Lenny and Squiggy -- who are rejected by the gatekeeper. Laverne and Shirley subsequently receive their heavenly “assignments,” with Shirley getting to work with her new husband in a dog clinic while Laverne is to be a bus driver for angelic studs.

Shirley awakens, now even more certain that they must return the check. Then, Laverne has her own dream about an afterlife in hell where they must answer to their misdeeds on Earth. There, the two get eternal sentences to roast marshmallows for the devil’s picnic. Shirley is furious at Laverne since her only crime was assisting Laverne in not returning the $56 check. The girls then encounter Lenny and Squiggy, who have become the devil’s henchmen. Frank, Edna, and Carmine also turn up in hell, sent there because of a connection to Laverne’s misdeeds. Laverne can’t believe it is all her fault and wakes up determined now to return the check posthaste. Shirley is happy to get Laverne back on “the straight and narrow.” However, once at the phone company, the girls are told that they actually owe $56 for Shirley’s four-hour call to her mother in California. Includes commercials.
