ED: YOUR LIFE IS NOW {EPISODE #009} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Ed Stevens, a New York lawyer who returns to his hometown of Stuckeyville, Ohio to manage a combination bowling alley/law office. Ed waits all day for a refrigerator from an appliance store which never arrives. Upset that he wasted so much time, he confronts the store manager, but he dismisses Ed's claims and says his refrigerator will be delivered in three weeks. Meanwhile, Carol discovers that her old high school boyfriend Troy McCallum is visiting Stuckeyville. He was once the quarterback of the high school football team and dated Carol for two years, but suddenly dumped her, breaking her heart. Carol claims she is long-since over the incident. Warren tries to ask Carol to a sophomore Christmas party at Stuckeybowl, but she declines. Ed learns about Troy's return and recalls Troy's enmity towards him in high school. To get revenge on the appliance store for wasting his time, Ed has Phil pass out fliers announcing a Christmas giveaway at the appliance store, telling customers that they will receive a free appliance if they can keep their hand on it until the store closes. The fliers also state that attempts to dissuade them would be a charade. Carol receives a voicemail from Troy, who wants to meet with her and catch up on old times. While Warren helps Ed decorate the bowling alley, Warren laments on what "losers" the both of them are. Ed notes that Warren reminds him of himself at his age. He regrets that he didn't ask more girls out back then and encourages Warren to ask his popular classmate Jessica out to the party. Ed visits the appliance store, pleased that his retaliation appears to be working, and reveals to the manager that he was the one who placed the fliers. Carol calls Troy back and agrees to meet him for drinks. She remarks at his seemingly perfect life: he has a high-ranking corporate job, has a lake house, is married, and has two children. Carol and Molly watch Warren attempt to talk to Jessica in the hall, but her boyfriend Tim, the quarterback for the school football team, interrupts and cajoles Warren into leaving. Ed is served a subpoena from the appliance store, seeking compensation for the revenue they lost due to Ed's prank. Ed decides to represent himself in court. He returns to Stuckeybowl to find Warren in his office, mad at him due to his failed attempt to talk to Jessica. He and Ed devise a new plan: while Jessica and her friends are out at a diner, Ed pretends to have a heart attack. Mike is on hand to "fail" to revive him before Warren moves in and "saves" Ed in an over-dramatic fashion. Later, Carol and Ed are talking about Troy's visit. She invites him to have drinks with them but Ed is reluctant to talk to Troy. In court, Ed freely admits to printing the fliers and the opposing lawyer points out that the revenue lost by the store is highly disproportionate to the monetary loss due to the absence of Ed's refrigerator. Warren tries to speak to Jessica again and she is more amenable to him, hoping to see him at the Christmas party. Ed makes his closing statement, pointing out that the money lost in the scenario is secondary and that he wanted to take the store's time away, since that was the thing he was upset about losing. The judge agrees and refuses the store's claim of compensation, but also points out that Ed inadvertently wasted all of the customer's time, and orders that he send hand-written notes of apology to each one. Carol is nervous about her meeting with Troy. She recalls his last words to her, "I've outgrown you," and is worried that he has progressed a great deal in his life while she has not. Molly points out that she's happier now than she was in high school. Ed plans to trick Troy into eating a cracker smeared with dog food in retaliation for an incident in high school when Troy made Ed do the same. Carol meets Troy at the Smiling Goat and they start to catch up. Ed arrives and Troy doesn't remember him. Ed successfully tricks Troy into eating the dog food and is immensely proud of himself until it becomes clear that Troy has no memory of making Ed eat dog food. The prank doesn't affect Troy at all and Ed is crestfallen. Meanwhile, at the Christmas party, Warren tries to make his move on Jessica but Tim and his friends interfere and make fun of him. At first Warren is cowed, but then he stands up for himself and makes fun of Tim, dressing up his insults as compliments. Tim, stunned, can do nothing but slink off. Later, Carol sits alone with Troy, who is still reminiscing about his "glory days" in high school, saying that he'll never be happier than he was back then. Carol goes to Stuckeybowl as the party is winding down and tells Ed that she feels sorry for Troy. Ed realizes that his "juvenile" prank was ultimately meaningless. They notice Warren talking to Jessica, who leaves the party to go with Tim to their friends' house, leaving Warren alone once again. After the party, Ed and Warren talk alone. Warren believes he is a loser but Ed is proud of him for standing up for himself, and compares Tim to Troy. He says people like them are successful in high school, but that people like Warren go on to better things and "get the girl" eventually. Warren appreciates this sentiment. Commercials deleted.
