ED: THE MUSIC BOX {EPISODE #013} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Ed Stevens, a New York lawyer who returns to his hometown of Stuckeyville, Ohio to manage a combination bowling alley/law office. Carol picks up an antique music box, a gift from her grandmother, from repairs; the clerk tells her that it could be worth a great deal of money. While out to lunch with Molly, Nancy, Mike, and Ed, Carol discovers that someone broke into her car and drove off with her music box. They call the police and they start asking questions, but it is clear they are not taking the case very seriously. Meanwhile, Warren continues to pursue Jessica, and finds that she and her guy friends are forming a team for the bowling league. Ed visits Bonnie and asks her to get the police to pursue the case of the stolen music box more thoroughly. He becomes uncomfortable when Bonnie starts asking questions about Carol. At Stuckeybowl, Warren tries to join Jessica's bowling team but they are already full. Phil offers to include him into his own team, the "Badass Cowboys." Bonnie gets the police to conduct a more thorough investigation and Ed and Carol are called down to the station to help identify suspects. One particular suspect, a middle-aged crossing guard named Matt Roberts, appears to stand out. In private, Carol tells Molly that she thinks Ed's relationship with Bonnie could be a good thing, but Molly calls her "insane" and says that Carol is deceiving herself about her attitude towards Ed. Over Chinese food Bonnie tells Ed that there isn't enough evidence to build a case against Roberts. The police chief will not question him out of frustration at being ordered around by Bonnie. She wonders aloud why Ed is putting so much effort into recovering the music box, but he deflects her questions. Mike videotapes Ed as he walks by Roberts at his crosswalk in order to record the expression on his face when Ed mentions the music box. The "Badass Cowboys" constantly make fun of Warren, eventually giving him the nickname "Lucky Charm." Ed shows Bonnie the tape, believing that Roberts's expression indicates guilt. Bonnie ridicules his effort and points out the tape is inadmissible as evidence, but promises to convince the police chief to take Roberts in for questioning. She also wants to question Carol, causing Ed some concern. Ed brings Carol into Bonnie's office and Carol recalls that she saw Roberts in the store the day of the theft, possibly overhearing the clerk mentioning its value. Later, Bonnie, Ed, and Carol all are in court as Roberts takes the stand. He testifies that he was in a local bar having a drink, and the bartender supports this story. Bonnie cross-examines and points out that he and the bartender are close friends, but this doesn't prove anything. Ed believes Roberts is lying and so goes to visit the bar himself, getting a cold reception from the bartender. Ed orders a martini but the bartender says they have only scotch, whiskey, and gin available. He tries to get the bartender to admit that he lied to support Roberts's testimony, but he refuses and throws Ed out. The case takes a downturn and Bonnie believes they are about to lose, but Ed manages to discover a flaw in Roberts's story: he testifies that he had a drink at the bar containing vermouth and Ed discovered that the bar does not have any. Outside of court, Ed confronts Roberts over his findings and tries to get him to admit to taking the music box. He says that he doesn't care about finding him guilty; all he wants is the music box to be returned. Phil's bowling team plays a game against Jessica's, and soon both teams are making fun of Warren, much to his displeasure. Roberts meets Ed in his office and gives him the music box. He says that he ordinarily wouldn't have resorted to theft but he was desperate; he explains how he is deeply in debt and has to care for his injured mother. He asks Ed for help and he promises to get Bonnie to take it easy on him. Ed returns the music box to Carol and she is overjoyed. She asks him to come inside but he declines. In the Stuckeybowl parking lot, Warren discovers that Harry, one of his bowling teammates, sabotaged Tim's car so that Warren could have the chance to drive Jessica home, which he promptly does. Ed and Bonnie bowl in the alley after-hours and he tries to convince her not to punish Roberts too thoroughly. She is angry that he would use their relationship in such a manner and they have an argument before she leaves. Warren drops Jessica off and asks if she would ever consider going out with him. She gives him a peck on the cheek and goes inside. In court, Bonnie decides to ask for leniency from the judge, claiming she changed her mind. Roberts is let off with six months' probation. That night, Bonnie visits Ed at home and tells him she went easy on Roberts. Furthermore, she says that this was always her intention; she fooled Ed into believing otherwise because she didn't want Ed to think that he was in control of all her decisions. Ed says he's frustrated with her mind games and tries to break things off with her but when she kisses him he gives in and makes out with her. They go inside and the episode ends as they go into Ed's bedroom together. Commercials deleted.
