MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: MURRAY CAN'T LOSE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.

In this episode, Mary is placed in charge of organizing the entertainment for the Teddy Awards, and everyone else is eager to hear about the nominations. Lou reveals that everyone – even Sue Ann – has been acknowledged, though Murray sadly notes that he has been nominated several times but has never won. As Mary struggles to find some amusing acts for the presentation, Ted offers her his "talents" as a ventriloquist, demonstrating his act with a very reluctant Lou serving as dummy. Georgette offers to sing and Mary agrees to give her an audition, though Ted informs Mary that she is not very talented. Lou soon confides to Mary that he has heard from an insider that Murray is going to win after all, and an elated Mary tries to hide her excitement. Murray states that he may not attend the dinner, however, and Lou is forced to spill the beans to him as well. With no ideas left, Mary wonder if she herself should provide the entertainment, though Lou's highly amused reaction to her timid rendition of "One For My Baby" gives her pause.

At the event, Sue Ann wins the award for her cooking program, and everyone is blown away when Georgette takes the stage and dances to "Steam Heat." The final category is announced, and Murray is highly embarrassed when he is not named the winner after all. The team gathers to celebrate their other wins. When Ted continues to act unimpressed by Georgette's performance, she calls him out on feeling threatened by her talents. Marie urges Murray to deliver his would-be acceptance speech, and everyone is touched when he offers kind words for all of his co-workers – even Ted. Commercials deleted.
