MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: MARY RICHARDS AND THE INCREDIBLE PLANT LADY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.
In this episode, Mary and Rhoda take her car to Charlie, her longtime mechanic. Though the workers are impressed by Mary's fastidious care of her automobile, she finds herself tempted by a newer model. At home, Rhoda skillfully revives one of Mary's plants, and Mary debates buying the new car. Rhoda offers encouragement and caution in equal measure. Rhoda then shows Mary her vast collection of plants, prompting Mary to wonder if she is "getting weird." Rhoda, with Georgette's staged help, asks her for a loan of $1,000 to fulfill her dream of opening a plant shop. Mary agrees, though she is taken aback when Rhoda raises the amount. When Mary heads to the bank, she is annoyed to find her "rainy-day account" does not allow for non-emergency withdrawals, forcing her to take out a loan instead.
Six weeks later, Mary frets to Murray that Rhoda has not yet paid her back, despite having enough success to give employee Georgette a raise. Georgette arrives with a plant for Lou, who admits that he does not have a green thumb. Rhoda then reveals that Mary's car, which she has borrowed, seems to be on the fritz. Mary, frustrated to realize that she could have purchased the new car weeks ago had she not given Rhoda the loan, takes her back to Charlie. There, Rhoda explains that she has put a down payment on a new automobile for Mary, feeling that simply returning her money would be "boring." Mary, surprised by the gesture, tries to hide her disdain for the car's "golden" hue. Later, Charlie arrives to deliver the vehicle and admits that he planned to ask Mary out on a date before learning of her job. Lou and Ted inform him that Mary is definitely not "too good" to go out with a mechanic. Commercials deleted.
