NEWHART: FUN WITH DICK AND JOANNA (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.
In this episode, Joanna teases Dick about his total lack of spontaneity after a pair of departing guests reveals their "go-wherever" style of vacationing. Michael is heartbroken when his beloved automobile is damaged in a minor accident; Dick tries to prove Joanna wrong by whisking her off to Quebec on a "lark" – though she quickly deduces that he has secretly planned every detail of the trip. Michael sends his car to a "specialist," and though Stephanie is disgusted by his rustic pick-up truck loaner vehicle, George is dazzled by the "sensible" car.
Dick wakes Joanna up in the middle of the night, promising that he is ready to be genuinely impulsive; however, their trip goes quickly awry as their car breaks down, stranding them in the middle of New Hampshire. They are forced to accept a room at a sleazy by-the-hour motel, whose proprietor disapproves of their "beatnik" vacation plans. The experience grows worse as they are kept awake by noise and joined by an unexpected "roommate." Back at the inn, Michael and Stephanie decide to stay home rather than humiliate themselves in "Big Red," and George instead takes the truck for a spin. Dick and Joanna spend the night in their car, and though Dick sourly calls the trip his last-ever "madcap hurrah," they are ultimately treated to the sight of a beautiful New England sunrise. Commercials deleted.
