MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: MORE THAN NEIGHBORS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.
In this episode, Mary meets her downstairs neighbor, Barbara, who explains that she is getting married and moving to Milwaukee, giving up her job as a piano-bar performer as well as her apartment. Later, Mary plays Scrabble with Phyllis and Rhoda, and when Rhoda asks about Barbara's soon-to-be-vacant apartment, Phyllis inadvertently reveals that the building's unreliable "L&P Management" is none other than herself and Lars. At work, the penny-pinching Ted is annoyed when Mary approves only some of his outlandish expense account charges. When Mary posts a notice about the vacant apartment on the office board, Lou's warning to Mary comes too late and Ted reveals that he himself is looking for a new place. Desperate not to be neighbors with her annoying co-worker, Mary pretends that the apartment is highly expensive, though Ted is actually impressed with the pretend rent price and decides to visit the place.
Phyllis gives Ted a tour of the apartment, and he soon accepts it, despite Rhoda's claims that Mary is a loud, annoying upstairs neighbor. Mary considers moving out herself rather than put up with him. Phyllis soon arrives at the station with Ted's lease, though he refuses to sign it until his strangely young lawyer, Michael Lee, has looked it over. Murray is amused by the proceedings, but Lou comes to Mary's rescue and nitpicks the details of the lease. He points out its many "hidden fees," playing on Ted's habit of haggling over small amounts of money. Ted finally decides against taking the place, much to Mary's great relief. However, she and Rhoda are annoyed later on to find that Phyllis has rented the space to five young stewardesses. Commercials deleted.
