Summary

In this episode, Lou is extremely annoyed when Ted tells their viewing audience to "drive carelessly" and informs the anchor that he is "fried." Ted explains that he was reading the copy as written, meaning that Murray is to blame. Lou very resentfully apologizes to Ted and "rehires" him. Mary admits to Murray that she has had to cover for several other recent mistakes that he has made. She then asks about his obvious fatigue and lack of focus. Murray tells her that he has taken a second job teaching night school in order to buy Marie a new car for their tenth wedding anniversary. Later, Rhoda returns home from an unpleasant date and tells Mary that Murray was actually her cab driver.
Ted tries to make additional demands for his "rehiring," and Murray confesses that he lied about the exact nature of his second job to make it seem more impressive. As a result, Marie now believes him to be having an affair with Mary. Ted gossips to Lou about the non-affair; when Mary tries to help Murray by telling Lou about Murray's predicament, Lou demands that he quit one job or the other. Realizing that Murray is stuck in an impossible situation, Mary visits Marie and assures her that, while Murray is indeed a "very sexy man," the two are merely platonic friends. When Marie remains unconvinced, Mary spills the beans about his second job and secret plans for an extravagant present. Delighted, Marie immediately breaks her confidence to Mary and enthusiastically thanks her husband, though he admits that he had to settle for a 1963 vehicle. Back at work, Lou is pleased to find that Ted's latest dumb mistake is entirely his own. Commercials deleted.
