WHITE SHADOW, THE: THE STRIPPER (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about Ken Reeves, a former professional basketball player, who begins a new life as the basketball coach of Carver High, an inner-city high school in Los Angeles. In this episode, after a confrontation with Salami's father over the curriculum's "dirty" books, Sybil discovers that Ken is seeing Miss Susan Stockwood, the chemistry teacher/dance instructor. The basketball team is taken aback when Ken urges them to take her classes, declaring that dance training will help their overall athletic ability. Ken goes bowling with Susan, and they quickly make plans for another evening out together. On Wednesday, Susan takes Ken to a burlesque-themed nightclub, Papillons, and he is shocked when she takes the stage to perform a striptease. She defends her side job, stating that it is not immoral, but Ken is clearly uncomfortable with her "secret life." He confides in Jim, who has no choice but to confront Susan about it, but she invites Jim and Sybil to come along to the club to see that there is nothing offensive about the performance.
At Papillons, Ken tries to defend Susan, telling Jim and Sybil that it is "just like any other nightclub." Later, he invites her to a basketball game for the following Wednesday night, but she reminds him that she "works" on Wednesdays, correctly guessing that he is trying to pull her away from her other job because of his discomfort. Frustrated, Ken catches his players reading a dirty magazine in the locker room and confiscates it, causing them to laugh at his "uptight nature." Everyone is thrilled when the team wins their next game, though Ken, still brooding over Susan, refuses Salami's offer to accompany the players out for a celebration. The boys head to Papillons, despite its 21-and-over rule, and they are amazed to spot their chemistry teacher up on the stage. Salami's father, Mr. Pettrino, gets wind of the surprise and angrily confronts Jim and Sybil, demanding that Susan be fired for her inappropriate behavior.
Bill urges Ken to make his feelings abundantly clear to Susan, and the rumor quickly spreads through the school, prompting Susan's students to make boorish jokes in class. When Jim calls her into his office, she agrees that her best course of action is to leave the school, though she is greatly offended when Ken issues an ultimatum, stating that she must choose him or the job. Later, Bill and Katie urge a grumpy Ken to call Susan and make things right, and after some consideration, he heads to Papillons and meets Susan's co-worker, Dolly, who assures him that she is "a nice girl." When Susan finds him backstage, he asks her to have dinner, revealing that he has chosen to accept her personal choices. Commercials deleted.
