WHIRLYBIRDS: GLAMOUR GIRL (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about a pair of helicopter pilots for hire.
Actress Jessica Johns finishes production on a major motion picture and wants to have some privacy from the ever-present media hounding her. Chuck and P.T. take her up in their helicopter, where she laments that the studio is overprotective of her and keeps tight control over what she is permitted to do. She admits that she is planning to adopt a young girl named Susan, although her agent insists that this will be disastrous for her career. Jessica is not married, but she believes she will be able to circumvent the legal obstacles preventing her from adopting a child. She asks Chuck and P.T. to drop her off in a small desert town where Susan is waiting to meet her. Before that, however, she stops in to the bank to see one of the tellers, Henry Davis. Henry is her ex-husband, but has since remarried; it turns out that Susan is their child and Jessica was given custody of her by the court following their divorce, although Henry refuses to relinquish her, believing that Jessica is not fit to be her parent. Jessica demands that Susan be turned over, and Henry asks that she come by that afternoon so they can explain what is happening to Susan.
Jessica goes to visit Susan at the local nursery school, accompanied by Chuck and P.T. She introduces herself to Susan and they all play a game of jump-rope together. They are interrupted when Susan starts coughing and heads inside, claiming that she has a cold. Later they all go to the Davis household as scheduled, but find a police officer waiting for them on the front step. He presents her with a note addressed to her, explaining that Henry has taken his family and departed with them. Henry’s manager at the bank is in the house, and he also wishes to find out about his whereabouts. He called the police since he noticed Henry behaving oddly, and since the state bank examiner is to visit them the following day he suspects Henry of tampering with bank funds in some way. On the road, Henry’s wife Jean becomes increasingly concerned about Susan’s condition, believing that her tonsils may have become infected. She asks that Henry turn back so they can face Jessica in court, but Henry believes they would not win and is unwilling to risk giving Susan up. The road is blocked off and they decide to stay at a nearby motel owned by Jean’s sister.
Feeling guilty for their disappearance, Jessica admits to the police that she was visiting in order to attempt to take Susan away. She did not want to reveal it due to the negative publicity it would generate for the studio. The police suggest that she charge Henry with kidnapping, but she declines, hoping not to cause him further trouble. They warn her that her confession will be written up as a police report and will soon be public knowledge, but Jessica does not care. Chuck and P.T. offer to use their helicopter to find Henry and his family to tell them that they no longer have a reason to run away from Jessica. Their long search yields nothing until they spot Henry’s car in the motel parking lot. They are greeted by Jean’s sister, who informs them that Henry and his family have already left; the radio news falsely reported that Jessica accused Henry of stealing money from the bank. They hope to find Henry and clear up the misunderstanding, and Jessica says that she has changed her mind and will not be claiming Susan. Chuck discovers that Henry is on a road which is scheduled to be demolished in less than an hour. Chuck, P.T., and Jessica race after them in the helicopter as Henry blows past the sign warning drivers to keep off the highway. Chuck catches up to them and attempts to stop the car, but fails. Instead he and P.T. fly over to the demolition crew and disrupt the blasting of the road. Henry’s car gets stuck on the road and is soon found by the demolition crew and the police. The policeman tells Henry about Jessica’s decision and she bids a silent goodbye to Susan from aboard the helicopter. Commercials deleted.
