REMINGTON STEELE: STEELE BELTED (TV)
Summary
One in this detective series about private investigator Laura Holt, whose Remington Steele Detective Agency fails until she pairs up with a suave stranger claims to be the fictitious Remington Steele. In this episode, Remington brings home a date, Cleo, only to find that his apartment has been trashed and searched. Cleo is interested in continuing the evening, but Remington pursues the thief. At the office, Laura works on a case and Remington tells her about the break-in, and she suggests it is someone from his mysterious past. He receives a phone call from a Waldo who says he has a bill of sale that proves Shapiro’s innocence and Rubio’s guilt, and is completely confused. Elsewhere, Laura goes to a hotel and tracks down Shapiro, who is hiding along with his lawyer, Phillips. Shapiro, who unknowingly bought “hot” antique coins from the elusive Rubio, says he will not go back to prison and instead plans to escape to Rio de Janeiro. Remington searches for Waldo, but is attacked. Murphy returns from San Francisco, where he was searching for Rubio, and shows Laura a photograph of Rubio with Shapiro’s ex-wife, Ivy. Remington reappears, injured and disgruntled, demanding to know details of the case, and Laura explains, saying that Waldo notarized the sale of the coins from Rubio to Shapiro and that the bill of sale will exonerate him, and Remington draws a parallel to the 1950 film “D.O.A.”
Laura and Remington visit Shapiro again, saying they do not yet have the bill. Phillips flirts with Laura and asks her out, much to Remington’s annoyance. Later, Murphy quizzes Laura about her feelings for Remington, and to prove that she is not interested in him, she calls Phillips and agrees to the date. To her surprise, he takes her to an amusement park, and they have a fun evening until he brings up Remington, saying he does not trust him. Elsewhere, Remington has another date with Cleo, but the night is once again brought to an abrupt halt when Waldo’s dead body is found lying in Remington’s bed. Laura quickly arrives with Phillips in tow, and when their dates leave, Remington and Laura guess that Rubio killed Waldo to prevent him revealing the bill of sale and purposefully set up Shapiro, although a jealous Remington would rather discuss Laura’s date. Shapiro is placed in jail for his attempts to leave the country, and Remington swears to free him. He then tells Laura how little he trusts Phillips, and the two men soon have a confrontation. When they locate Ivy, she attacks them, believing that Shapiro has sent them to railroad Rubio, her fiancé, out of jealousy, an impression increased when Rubio’s dead body turns up in her trunk, killed with Shapiro’s gun. Remington recruits Murphy and they admit their dislike for one another, but agree to work together for Laura’s sake. They discover that Phillips and Rubio knew one another of old and turn their suspicions to the lawyer. When Remington breaks into his home, however, he ends up inadvertently spying on another date with Laura.
Later, he bursts into the office as Laura, Murphy, Shapiro and Phillips conduct a meeting and Shapiro states that Ivy cannot have killed Waldo and Rubio. Remington tries to pin the focus on Phillips, and Shapiro is furious to realize that he is guilty. Phillips denies everything, but Remington says that they found his hair at one of the crime scenes, and Phillips, aided by a punch from Remington, gives up. Laura, knowing that Remington faked the hair evidence, asks him if he would have pursued Phillips so avidly had she not dated him, but he refuses to confirm. Shapiro is freed and reunites with Ivy, and Remington purchases Ivy’s car, resolving to have the trunk cleaned. Commercials deleted.
