HILL STREET BLUES: FILM AT ELEVEN (TV)
Summary
One in this series of police dramas about the personal and professional lives of the officers of Hill Street Station, a precinct located in a run-down urban area. In this episode, the documentary camera crew records the morning roll call, at which the cops are amused to hear of the theft of a llama from the zoo. While undercover, Washington and LaRue catch a young purse-snatcher and are surprised to find a gun among her stolen goods. As Furillo tries to tell Cynthia that he does not make an interesting film subject, Washington calls and explains that the gun may be the one used to shoot Hill and Renko. Belker processes a young man who attacked a prostitute and is annoyed when he declares that he is a vampire and has legally changed his name to "Dracula." Hunter performs an unusual demonstration of some new crime-fighting gadgets, and Dracula becomes highly agitated when the cops attempt to place him in a cell. Belker talks him down with surprising kindness, and Furillo allows him to be placed in a "private cell" downstairs.
The camera crew accompanies Hill and Renko as they answer a call about noisy live animals in an apartment, though the incensed occupant refuses to let them in and steals Renko's nightstick. The purse thief refuses to talk, though they find the name "Rita Perez" in the stolen items and Furillo decides not to tell Hill and Renko that they may be on track to finding their shooter. Belker brings in several members of the Perez family, who quickly get into an argument with the thief, and Furillo has them all locked up. Davenport arrives to see Dracula, though Furillo asks for her help on the Perez case, and she convinces them to cooperate and provide information about the gun's origins. The woman with the live animals is hauled in, having stolen the llama and other creatures for voodoo sacrifice, and Furillo decides to let the Perez relatives go free after they give their information. Hill and Renko are surprised when LaRue and Washington awkwardly decline their invitation to play cards later, and LaRue flirts with Cynthia and gives her the inside scoop on the black vans case, in which a victim claimed to have been robbed by a number of large men, though it was in fact by several female prostitutes.
Washington and LaRue question a shop owner, DeCarlo, who admits that he "found" the gun in his store several months ago and directs them towards a young junkie, Eddie Hoban. Davenport informs Furillo that Dracula is an outpatient in a mental facility and should not be held at the police station, and when they go downstairs to retrieve him, they are stunned to find that he has hanged himself. Eddie denies any involvement with the shooting, though cannot provide a helpful alibi, and LaRue and Washington grow increasingly suspicious at their colleagues' odd behavior, still unaware that the gun has been found. Furillo finally calls them into a lineup, and they both quickly identify Eddie as the shooter. Esterhaus finds evidence placing Eddie near the crime scene at the time of the shooting, though Goldblume, who knows the young man, tells Furillo that he is not the true perpetrator. Later, Davenport returns and assures Furillo that he is not to blame for Dracula's death, and the two head for home together. Commercials deleted.
