DREW CAREY SHOW, THE: HOTEL DREW (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies starring stand-up comedian Drew Carey as a single guy who attempts to juggle his romantic endeavors and his menial job at a Cleveland department store, while still maintaining his sense of humor. Drew is incensed when Nigel announces a broad pay cut for most of the Winfred-Louder employees via a conference call. To make ends meet, Drew rents out his spare room to Mitch and Les, an elderly gay couple. The next morning, Oswald and Lewis ask for Mitch and Les's help in decorating a house they just bought, and they agree. They hear about Drew's troubles and work and Les tells him that they are friends with the CEO of Korman's Park Avenue, an upscale retail store. Drew asks them if they could set up an interview for him there, and they are happy to do so. His interview goes well and soon Drew is appointed vice-president of operations at Korman's. However, Drew feels drastically under-qualified for his new job, believing that he can't possibly function there. Mitch and Les try to instill enough confidence in Drew to get him to face his fears about the new job and try his best. At his new office, Drew receives an assignment from his new boss asking him to reduce the store's budget. He begins working on the task, but feels his confidence slipping away, especially when a mental personification of his own self-doubt manifests to distract and undermine him. Meanwhile, Mitch and Les reveal their odd, off-beat decorations to Lewis and Oswald's house. They love the decorations, although Kate is disparaging towards them. After a week, Drew presents his budget-saving plan to his superiors. They are impressed, but his cuts fall short of their requested figure. Drew jokingly suggests that they fire him in order to make up the money, but they take his idea seriously and he is eliminated. Drew arrives home to find his friends throwing him a surprise party in honor of his first week on the new job, which quickly disperses when he announces that he was fired. Mitch and Les announce that they are leaving; Mitch just inherited a Victorian-style home in Vermont and they plan to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Nigel unexpectedly arrives and practically begs for Drew to return to his old job. Despite the harsh job market and Drew's financial situation, he refuses Nigel's request, believing that he can find a better job that he loves doing. The episode ends as Lewis and Oswald discover that their new house is being used by some people as a garbage dump. Includes commercials.
