Summary
The only program on this tape. Episode seventeen of twenty in this television dramatic series chronicling the love affairs of two American girls living in Beijing who become involved with the inhabitants of a traditional Chinese courtyard.
Episode seventeen mainly deals with the consequences of the growing awareness of the love affair between Li Tianming and Jessie and finally ends with a divorce between Tianming and his wife Qin Fen. Episode seventeen picks up the last scene from episode sixteen where Mr. and Mrs. Li are still wondering if there is something seriously wrong with their eldest daughter-in-law Qin Fen for not returning home last night, and then Mr. Li gives his grandson Xiaohu a piggyback ride to quiet him, as he is distraught over not seeing his mother Qin Fen. At her work, Qin Fen is playing mahjong with her co-workers to distract herself from having to deal with her husband Tianming’s affair, but Tianming shortly comes in to speak to her about the very issue. Her co-workers leave to give them some privacy, but they all stay at the other side of the door to listen to the conversation. Qin Fen says she can forgive Tianming for this one time, but she won’t be able to forgive him for the next times and asks Tianming not to see Jessie anymore. Yet Tianming admits he is in love with Jessie and can't promise he won’t see her again, so Qin Fen asks for a divorce, which Tianming wants more time to think about. After Tianming leaves, her co-workers all barge in to give Qin Fen advice, then her sister-in-law Louise comes to visit Qin Fen and throws all of them out in order to give Qin Fen some peace and quiet. During dinnertime that same evening, Mr. and Mrs. Li question Tianming why Qin Fen is still staying at her work. Tianming replies with "it's none of their business," but permits Louise to tell his parents about the whole affair. Mr. Li then goes to beat up Tianming with a wooden stick, Tianming first takes the beating willingly, but then throws his father out of his room after some minutes. This whole incident is witnessed by their neighbors in the courtyard, and everyone blames Tianming for being unfaithful. The next day, Mr. Li goes to see Louise’s father Jack (who is also Tianming's new boss now) to request him to stop Tianming from continuing to see Jessie and divorcing Qin Fen, but Jack responds with "it's none of his business either." Meanwhile, Mrs. Li visits Qin Fen, who insists on a divorce and gives her the divorce papers to pass along to Tianming. Upon receiving the divorce papers, Tianming goes to see Jessie and asks her to marry him after his divorce is finalized. Jessie is initially caught off-guard, but then she agrees to his marriage proposal. Next day, Tianming and Qin Fen sign divorce papers in a local marriage office. When they leave the office doors, Jessie is there to speak to Qin Fen alone. Jessie offers to give Qin Fen USD10000 for her "troubles," but Qin Fen angrily refuses. Qin Fen then goes to pack her belongings from the Li household and moves into her work dormitory for good. Episode seventeen ends with Qin Fen and everyone else in the Li household crying and saying goodbye in a very sad atmosphere.
