DHARMA & GREG {DHARMA AND GREG}: THIS DIAMOND RING (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about two unlikely San Francisco soulmates: Dharma, a yoga instructor who was raised by hippies, and her husband Greg, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Justice Department. In this episode, Dharma and Greg shop for books and Dharma learns that she has let her driver's license expire, which Greg feels is irresponsible. At the DMV, Dharma suffers through another bad photograph and hurriedly takes the test, during which Greg nitpicks the technical aspects of the driving laws, much to the clerk's disinterest. Dharma is jubilant when she somehow passes her test, but then realizes that her diamond heirloom engagement ring is missing and panics, not wanting Greg to know that she has made another careless mistake. She attempts to trick him into leaving his office so that she can search the room, but this plan fails thanks to a nervous temp secretary. Dharma's parents help her to search their apartment, though they disapprove of her obsession with a material object, and Pete stops by while they are looking, asking Dharma's advice on romancing Gretchen. Distracted, she gives him a list of ideal boyfriend traits written by herself and her friends as teens, and he takes it gratefully.

Dharma eventually finds the ring on the roof and confesses the truth to Greg, vowing to be more careful in the future. The couple then goes out with Gretchen and Pete, whose romance is blossoming thanks to Dharma's sound, though strange, advice. When she takes the ring to be cleaned, however, she learns that it is a fake, and when they question Kitty, she admits that she gave Greg an imitation ring because of the speed of their marriage and her doubts about Dharma's trustworthiness. Dharma is offended that she has not rectified the situation during the five years of their marriage and leaves. Elsewhere, Pete begs Greg for help, saying that Gretchen has fallen too hard for him and is being clingy and obsessive, and Greg tells him to simply "be himself" to undo it. Kitty takes Dharma to the bank and gives her the real ring as well as a safety deposit box, and Dharma frets about whether or not to wear the genuine diamond or to leave it somewhere safe. Gretchen, having been dumped, comes by for advice, and Dharma is unintentionally helpful when she talks about locking precious things away rather than risking their being lost. The ring then gets stuck in Dharma's bizarre jewelry box, but when she tells Kitty about it, she realizes that she has been given another fake. The two argue again, though Greg and Edward are unconcerned. Later, Marlene is pleased to see the beautiful Gretchen buying self-help books, desperate to win Pete back. Includes commercials and promos.
