ABC PREMIERE EVENT: STEPHEN KING'S ROSE RED {PART 3 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

Part three of three in this miniseries from Stephen King about a group of psychics investigating a haunted mansion.

While running through the house in a panic, Emery is confronted by several ghosts, including the decaying remains of Pam. When the group reunites, Emery convinces them that Vic and Pam are both dead, and that they should leave as soon as possible. Joyce, overcome with insane determination, calls him "cowardly and mistaken." Rachel and Steve then find Annie standing on a chair to get at the miniature version of Rose Red, and she falls down, sustaining a head injury. At that moment, every previously-shut door and window in the house springs open. While Steve, Rachel, and Joyce tend to Annie, Emery heads outside to look for his mother. He's tackled by Carl, who runs further into the woods, screaming. Emery is scared off by Vic's ghost, and Carl is cornered by Kevin's ghost.

After updating the others, Emery decides that he'll leave on his own. At the front door he is stopped by the ghosts of Deanna and Pam, who try to seduce him into staying. Annie awakens and is possessed by Ellen, who refuses to let any of them leave. All the doors and windows shut again; Emery's hand gets caught in the door and four of his fingers are severed. While Steve and Nick try in vain to keep the crows offVic's body, Joyce encourages Annie to keep the doors shut, as she believes that it's what the house "wants" her to do. The power goes out and Joyce continues her recordings, unconcerned with the deaths that have taken place within the house. Steve communicates with Annie telepathically, much to Joyce's frustration. Emery and Nick report that Kevin's corpse is suspended from the mirror library's ceiling.

Nick starts to believe that Joyce intends to "sacrifice" the rest of the team to the house; he notes that the house itself seems determined to place them in a state of undeath instead of killing them. Emery believes that knocking Annie unconscious or killing her will release all the doors and allow them to escape.Joyce reacts violently to these suggestions. Nick calms her down as he explains that Steve is an integral part of the house's disturbances as he is part of the Rimbauer bloodline. Nick speculates that Steve's psychic potential is magnified exponentially while inside the house. He also claims that Ellen is employing both Annie and Steve to exercise her will from beyond the grave. Nick's theories restore Steve's memory from his childhood of encountering Ellen in Rose Red, where she offered him a hammer and asked him to help her "build."

Cathy goes to the kitchen to get iced tea and Kay leaps out of the wine cellar and attempts to strangle her, believing that she has killed Emery. Nick arrives and saves Cathy by knocking Kay unconscious with a billiard ball. While Steve attempts to convince Annie to open the doors and let them out, Nick and Cathy tie up Kay. She awakens and sees the ghosts of Sukeena and Pam in the wine cellar and screams in panic, but Cathy and Nick cannot see them and leave her there for the time being. The house rearranges itself and Nick and Cathy become lost. They wander through a hallway still under construction. Joyce and Annie go to check on her equipment, and Emery follows behind them, frightened of being left alone.

Soon Nick and Cathy are attacked by an apparition, and Nick locks Cathy in a side room to save her. He is devoured by the creature. Cathy emerges and finds nothing except Nick's flashlight. The ghost of Ellen tries to get her to join with the other spirits, but Cathy runs off in a panic. She stumbles into the mirror library and sees Kevin's 's corpse. She is nearly absorbed by the floor, but manages to escape and makes her way to the attic. Her psychic powers activate and she writes a message in the dust coating a portrait of Ellen and John Rimbauer. During this, she receives a vision elaborating on the circumstances of John's death: Ellen caught him in the attic's tower attempting to force himself on Sukeena, and the two of them pushed John out the window in a rage. Steve and Rachel find Cathy as she is being attacked by the ghost of April. Steve tackles her from behind and she disintegrates, thus saving Cathy's life.

Sukeena's ghost appears to Kay and drags her into the wine cellar. The group reunites and starts arguing about what to do. Rachel breaks down and admits that Annie could be responsible for their deaths. The house unleashes a windstorm inside the room and Emery approaches Annie with a fireplace poker. Annie stops him by animating a suit of medieval armor to attack him, stopping his advance. The windstorm dies down and Cathy and Annie use their sensitivity to psychic impressions to deliberately cause disturbances in the house and force it to open its doors, over Joyce's objections. This attempt causes another windstorm, as well as light fixtures all over the house to explode. Their attempt ends successfully, with the doors in the house opening and shattering every window. Joyce's recording equipment is destroyed before everything dies down.

An enraged Joyce takes a screwdriver and advances on Cathy and Annie. However, a fiery apparition from the fireplace knocks her down before she can succeed. The house shakes and shudders, and everyone except Joyce rushes to escape. Kay's ghost emerges from a mirror and tries to strangle her son, but Emery fights back and Steve pulls him out of the mirror. Ellen's ghost appears again and offers Steve the hammer; this time he takes it and hurls it into her chest. The house continues to explode around them as they make it outside. Joyce finds herself surrounded by the spirits of the house, including the ghosts of Pam, Vic, Kay, Kevin, and Carl. Left without any escape, the spirits close in and kill Joyce. Outside, Annie proclaims Rose Red to be a "bad place" and uses her powers to bombard the house with boulders, causing massive destruction. Six months later, Steve, Emery, Cathy, Rachel, and Annie return to Rose Red on the morning before its demolition to pay their respects to the dead. Annie is learning to socialize, and Emery has become more personable. The spirits of Rose Red -- now including Joyce -- gather in the house's tower and watch as the survivors drive off. Includes commercials.
