SHUIHU ZHUAN: BAIHU JIETANG {OUTLAWS IN THE MARSH:
WHITE TIGER INTEGRITY HALL} {PART 5} {MANDARIN
CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part five of
forty-three in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "Outlaws in the Marsh," written by Shi
Naian in the late-1300s. This adaptation closely
follows the novel, which tells the story of how a group
known as the 108 Outlaws from Shuihu come together
and rebel against the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279).
Part five continues to focus on Lin Chong and Lu Da, who
are to become two of the 108 Outlaws later in the series.
Part five picks up from part four where Gao Yanei is
just about to rape Ling Chong''s wife. Fortunately Lin
Chong arrives in the nick of time to stop the rape and
beats Gao Yanei away. Afterwards, Lin Chong relates the
incident to Lu Da, who insists on some form of revenge,
but Lin Chong is afraid of becoming an enemy of Gao
Yanei’s father, Gao Qiu, who is also Lin Chong's
supervisor. Meanwhile Gao Yanei pretends to be sick and
begs his father to get Lin Chong's wife for him as the
only cure for his sickness. Gao’s close bodyguards and
advisers also warn Gao Qiu that Lin Chong might be
thinking of revenge anyway, even if the Gaos don't do
anything else to the Lins. Eventually, Gao Qiu agrees to
a plan to get rid of Lin Chong for good. A few days
later, Lin Chong buys a beautiful saber in the streets
from a man who claims the weapon is a family heirloom.
A few more days later, Gao Qiu, who has heard of this
incident, asks Lin Chong to bring the saber to him for a
good look. Lin Chong obediently does what he's asked,
but when he arrives at the appointed place, he realizes
he is in the middle of Baihu Integrity Hall, where Gao
Qiu usually talks about national security issues and
weapons are not allowed. Before Lin Chong escapes, Gao
Qiu suddenly shows up and accuses Lin Chong of trying to
assassinate him. Gao Qiu then calls guards to arrest Lin
Chong, who doesn't resist in the hopes of avoiding
further trouble. When Lu Da hears of Lin Chong's arrest,
he wants to rescue him right away, but he is stopped by
his street punk friends and Lin Chong's father-in-law. A
few days later, Lin Chong is sent for trial in front of
the Kaifeng Prefecture Judge, who is in charge of all
crimes in Dongjing (Eastern Capitol). The judge knows of
Lin Chong's innocence, but doesn’t want to anger Gao Qiu
either, so he sentences Lin Chong to a prison work camp
in Cangzhou. Yet, Gao Yanei is still not satisfied with
Lin Chong's predicament and schemes with his close
bodyguards to murder Lin Chong on his way to Cangzhou.
Right before Lin Chong leaves, he divorces his wife,
against her or her father's consent. Part five ends
with Lin Chong begging for some water to drink from the
two wardens who are transporting him to Cangzhou.
