CHEERS: THE BOOK OF SAMUEL (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. In this episode, Frasier remarks on the odd similarities between his job and Woody's, and Woody reveals his "secret" for dealing with his clients' complaints. Sam declares that he is going away for the weekend and must leave one of the others in charge, and Woody, Diane and Carla embark on a series of silly methods of determining the "winner." Woody is finally named the temporary boss, and he soon receives a letter from his girlfriend Beth in Indiana ending their relationship and admitting that she is marrying someone else. The others attempt to comfort him and suggest that he should find a rebound, though Diane objects. Beth then arrives with her new fiancé Leonard and they express their profound guilt over hurting Woody, leading Diane to intervene and claim that Woody has a new girlfriend of his own, suggesting that they should double date.
Frustrated, Woody unearths Sam's infamous "little black book" and decides to call Desiree, whom Sam has noted is "the best." He mentions Sam's name and successfully asks her out, and then immediately appoints Carla as his replacement, mostly to prevent Diane from making a "campaign" speech. Everyone is surprised when Desiree turns out to be a frumpy older woman, however, and it is soon revealed that she is actually "the best" cleaning lady, not girlfriend. Woody realizes his mistake and is embarrassed, but Beth and Leonard soon arrive and he is forced to continue the charade as the four of them head out for dinner. They consider going dancing next, but Diane persuades Woody to put an end to the lie and he confesses the truth to Beth, who admits that she already knew. She explains that while she still cares for Woody, they are no longer a good match because he has become "an adventurous type" since leaving Indiana, and the two part on good terms. Desiree then overhears the other bar patrons laughing at the mix-up and takes offense, but Woody tells her that he genuinely likes her and needs "someone to talk to," and they decide to continue their evening together after all. Commercials deleted.
