CHEERS: NORMAN'S CONQUEST (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

Norm takes on a boutique as a client and brings its owner, Emily Phillips, into Cheers. The other patrons notice that Emily is young and attractive, although Norm wants to keep their relationship on a strictly professional level. However, Carla and Cliff egg Norm on, causing him to suspect that Emily is attracted to him. Norm struggles with what course to take, uncertain about the prospect of cheating on Vera. Before Norm can make a decision Diane insists that he call Vera, but Norm makes a brief call that serves little purpose. Norm stops Emily as she’s leaving and he apologizes for seemingly ignoring her. She offers to bring him back to her place and make him dinner, and he accepts.

Later, Emily calls Cheers to ask about Norm’s whereabouts; it turns out he left her at her apartment several hours ago under the pretense of parking the car. Norm arrives at Cheers pretending that he just came from a wild sexual encounter with Emily. However, soon Coach reveals the truth to Norm, and Sam pulls him aside to talk in private. Norm admits to Sam that he couldn’t go through with it and has been sitting in his car for hours; he considers himself a “coward” for leaving Emily behind. Norm confesses that he loves Vera, and that she’s the only woman he’s slept with. He is uneasy about admitting this in front of the other guys at the bar, as his fidelity doesn’t fit in with their bragging about sexual conquests. Sam approves of Norm’s feelings, admitting that he envies his long, stable relationship. However, Norm is afraid of being branded a “wuss.” Diane enters after eavesdropping on the entire conversation, voicing her approval of Norm being a “one-woman man,” explaining that women respect such an individual. She believes the other guys at the bar are merely unhappy with their own relationships and want Norm to follow in their footsteps, and Norm realizes that he doesn’t have to listen to them. However, Norm goes right back to joking about Vera and his marriage, seemingly going against Diane’s advice. Commercials deleted.
