SI SHI TONG TANG {FOUR GENERATIONS UNDER ONE ROOF} {PART 3} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part three in this series based on the novel by Lao She about an extended family that embodies the Chinese nation's strength during World War II.
Part three shows the relationship between the three main families (Qi, Qian, and Guan) of the story in more detail; relates the beginning of war and people's reactions; shows the death of Qian Zhongson (second son of the Qian family) and its consequent results, including Qi Ruiquan's (third oldest grandson of the Qi family) leave of his family to join the war in the South. Part three begins with Mr. & Mrs. Guan joyfully talking about the probability of Mr. Guan obtaining a position within the local Japanese-controlled government. When You Tongfang, Mr. Guan’s concubine, overhears the conversation, she starts arguing with Mrs. Guan and blames her for selling their family to the Japanese. Mr. Guan leaves the house to avoid the argument. In the alleyway he sees Qi Ruixuan (oldest grandson of the Qi family) and asks him to start a business selling Chinese artwork to the Japanese, which Ruixuan flatly refuses. Ruixuan joins his own family in their house where his youngest brother Ruiquan is relating the news that Shanghai is fighting back the Japanese. Everyone is delighted at the news, except for Qi Tianyou (Ruixuan’s father), Qi Ruifeng (second oldest grandson of the Qi family) and his wife, Pang Juzi, who are worried about lack of imports into their shop during wartime. The Qi family happily cooks a special dinner to celebrate the war, while other neighbors like the rickshaw boy Xiao Cui and his wife, Li Si, Sun Qi, Elder Mrs. Ma, and others do the same. Next, the scene shifts to Qian Zhongshi who is rescuing some Chinese refugees from Japanese soldiers. When the Japanese soldiers catch up with them, Zhongshi successfully hides the Chinese refugees, but he himself dies with all the Japanese soldiers by pretending to transport them in his truck and then topping the truck over in a deep ditch. When the news of Zhongshi reaches home, Guan Xidi (oldest daughter of the Guan family), who has been in love with Zhongshi cries with Tongfang, who is sympathetic to her feelings. Yet Mrs. Guan urges Mr. Guan to report the whole Qian family to the Japanese as “traitors” in order to be more favorable with the Japanese. Upon hearing her parents’ scheme, Xidi goes to warn Zhongshi's father, Qian Moyin, and relates the death of his son as well. After initial sadness over his son’s death diminishes and he realizes that his family may not be safe, Moyin plans with Ruixuan to send a Chinese soldier named Wang Paizhang, whom Moyin had saved on an earlier day and kept him in his house, to safety. Ruixuan volunteers his youngest brother Ruiquan to take Wang Paizhang out of the Japanese-controlled Beiping area to rejoin the war in the South. Ruiquan readily agrees, since he has wanted to leave Beipeing and join the war in the South for awhile, and part three ends with Ruiquan leaving in the middle of the night.
